New York Red Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 I was at a charity dinner on Thursday night in New York for severely handicapped kids. One of the guests of honour was Ronan Tynan. For those of you who don't know him, he's handicapped also with his legs amputated below the knee. But, He's won Olympic medals at the Seoul games for the special Olympics. He's also a surgeon and a world class opera singer. Well, he sang YNWA at the end and it was absolutely amazing. Not of the volume or passion of the Kop of course, but incredible nevertheless. We should get him to Anfield to lead the troops sometime. He's really brilliant.
Paisley Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 (edited) Sounds good - why don't you email the club? Edited May 21, 2006 by Paisley
Murphman Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 I was in Tony Dali's restaurant in Marbella in the mid 90's He came around all the tables singing requests (For those who don't know him Tony is a world class tenor), he did YNWA for us it was feckin AWESOME so I can relate to your experience NYR.
New York Red Posted May 21, 2006 Author Posted May 21, 2006 It's amazing isn't it Murph? I swear I was getting so emotional listening to it, and I didn't want to look like a blubbering idiot in front of my table. But, my chin was quivering big time. You're right Paisley. I think I will email the club about it. It was that good. I'm going to get the message to Ronan also. By the way, he's a really funny fecker too.
Guest Red Flame Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 I can relate to this thread. I normally cringe when I hear people other than Gerry Marsden attempt YNWA however, on Red Nose Day some years ago, kopite Elvis Costello did a rendition of YNWA and it was absolutely fabulous. That has been the greatest version I have heard anyone sing. It even topped Gerry and the Pacemakers, in my opinion. I have tried to track down whether Elvis Costello has ever recorded YNWA and to my astonishment he hasn't !!
Leroy Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 You can listen to a bit of it here or download it, nice piece http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/store/arti...1612573,00.html
berdoing Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Probably one of the best renditions of You'll Never Walk Alone was on Wednesday, April 19 1989 in Italy.

If I'm not mistaken Ronan Tynan is an Irish guy who won some Irish TV talent show about 12 years ago before the advent of pop idol or any of that nonsense. He does have a great voice and is a popular tenor in these parts. If I recall correctly too he sang some song that was central to the rememberance services for the 9/11 attacks.I've seen him sing YWNA on television and he does a super job... I would have no objection to him singing it at Anfield becuase he certainly does the song justice. Edited May 22, 2006 by Mono
Cooldude Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 One of the best versions I've heard is performed by none other than Elvis Presley himself

Guest Sharkman69 Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Doesn't he sing the American national anthem before Yankees games as well ? Yep, he sings God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch in Yankees playoff games.
Hassony Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 the best version by far was the one done by the great robson & jerome
Paul B Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Ignoring the fuel above opting for Robson and Jerome I would say that the greatest version after our own is by the world's greatest singer, Aretha Franklin. As she can do no wrong and has the voice of an angel, and she is singing one of the greatest of all anthems, how could it go wrong? It doesn't, it's sublime, soaring, heart-rending and amazing. John Peel played it as his first record on air on the Monday night after Hillsborough. Spine-tingling stuff, it really is.

I don?t particularly like her version of it ? however it was entirely suitable for Peel to play that day ? fitted right into the mood at the time. Playing it now without that background - it just doesn?t feel right. In my opinion that version is fixed to Hillsborough and doesn?t belong elsewhere.

Aretha has just rang me up, she can't get access herself, anyway, she says, "Tell that NHE to f*** right off. I didn't sing it for him but for my church. Oh, and tell him he's gay as well." Not me mate, Aretha Franklin saying that. Take it up with her.
