this is what rafa inherited Goalkeepers 1 Jerzy Dudek, 22 Chris Kirkland, 29 Patrice Luzi Carl Medjani, 2 Stephane Henchoz, 36 Jon Otsemobor, 3 Steve Finnan, John Welsh, 21 Djimi Traore, 4 Sami Hyypia, 15 Salif Diao, 23 Jamie Carragher 16 Dietmar Hamann, 18 John Arne Riise, 13 Danny Murphy, 28 Bruno Cheyrou, 17 Steven Gerrard, 25 Igor Biscan, 11 Vladimir Smicer 10 Michael Owen, 9 El Hadji Diouf, 20 Anthony Le Tallec, 5 Milan Baros, 24 Florent Sinama Pongolle, 7 Harry Kewell, 8 Emile Heskey, 26 Richie Partridge and a commitment to sign Cisse with that bunch he has had to compromise between buying the 1-2 world class players each year with the need to revamp the whole squad. Its a well made point that half of the first team are still those players that rafa inherited, but consider who has gone and what they've been replaced by across the whole squad and you can see rafa has done pretty well with the money he had available. I think he's now reached a position where he can go for 1-2 players a year and concentrate his budget rather than having to compromise so much as previous years. I've no arguament that Rafa has underachieved in the transfer market compared to Wenger, but in his first few years Wenger inherited a great defence and built the midfield and forward line by acquistion, its only in the second half of his arsenal tenure that we've really seen his youth policy kick in. I'm hopefull that what Rafa has put in place will deliver a smilar dividend for us in the coming years. The reserves under GH were really the stiffs, but now they look there is a genuine possibility that some of them may progress to the first team and we are out competing for the best teenage talent across the world.
