There needs to be a time limit set on VAR decisions as, not only is taking anywhere up to five minutes to reach a conclusion unacceptable, any on-field decision by the referee taking so long to be queried by VAR shows that any possible missed transgression by the referee is patently not "clear and obvious".
It now appears that VAR officials have become trapped in a mindset and culture of actively seeking a reason to disallow a goal to justify their intervention, rather than giving a goal-scorer the benefit of the doubt and enhance the game by allowing more goals, as was initially claimed when VAR was first introduced.
To put it quite simply, if VAR can't decide within one minute, the referee's decision and/or goal should stand. The PL and PGMOL should take the lead on this, which could only spread across football, and bring back at least some semblance of the spontaneous and immediate joy and euphoria that only football can produce.
