Also many of the new signings have been good - Enrique and Bellamy for example have been two of our best players this season. Players have poor seasons - it happened to us in 2009/10 the season after we challenged for the title under Benitez. We still had Mascherano, Torres and the exact same squad that challenged for the title in 2008/9 just swapping Aquilani / Johnson for Alonso and Arbeloa. Yet we went from 2nd to 7th. Confidence and momentum mean a lot in football and when things aren't going to plan, motivation declines, confidence reduces and so does form and results. When we couldn't finish this season it became an issue and it didn't matter how many chances we created at times, we still wouldn't score whether it was open play or penalties. I really don't think much is wrong. Get Lucas fit, get Gerrard fit, sell some of the attacking players that haven't been good enough (Kuyt and Downing), reinvest the money into players who can help Suarez, Gerrard, Bellamy etc win us games. As defensively we have been good on the whole, as has our passing and creating chances. Yeah that went so well last time with Houiller / Evans.

Real fans? I'm a real fan and don't want Benitez back. He had six years in the job, now it is time for Dalglish to get time and patience that Benitez got, houiller got, Evans got, Shankly, Paisely, Fagan all got! Even if we got rid of Dalglish (and I'd be gutted if we did and I think it would totally go against The Liverpool Way - showing patience and support to managers) I wouldn't want Benitez back. Offer Benitez and role while keeping Dalglish? Yeah so whenever we lose a game the fans will say, "time for Dalglish to move upstairs and Benitez to take over"... NO THANKS!

If you have £40 million to spend on one player. Highly unlikely.

Stewart Downing's contribution so far this season.....

I think that is rubbish personally. Dalgish will do whatever is best for the club whether that makes him look wrong at times. Benitez was also very stubborn at times and not in a good way. -
I am thinking someone like Cruyff or Beckenbauer who aren't really scouts - they are more there to ensure the club plays the same way through out and has an identity and brand of football which is consistent. So if a young players teps up they already understand the system and style - as Ajax and Barca do. We have a style and an identitty, Dalglish knows this more than anything. What we need is someone who is a brilliant scout and can take some pressure off Dalglish by negotiating deals for players, existing or current.

A DOF is fine as long as his role doesn't step on the toes of Dalglish. I think we need a DOF to negotiate current player deals, scout new players and negotiate deals for new players. We don't need a DOF to dictate how we should play.

Stewart Downing's contribution so far this season.....

I guess the option is keep Downing or get around £10 maybe £12 million for him. I'd personally rather the money and reinvest it, than keep a player who gets no goals, no assists in the league and is scared to beat opposition defenders. One of my least favourite players for a long time. -
Since Comolli left a few of the player who were deemed not good enough have raised their game in Henderson and Carroll. I don't get the criticism Dalglish gets for the transfers, I think he has bought well, with only Downing a flop. Some were too expensive - that is not his fault, he didn't negotiate the deals and that is why Comolli left!

I'm not convinced personally. We have some many new players now this is clearly Dalglish's squad and very different to the one Benitez built. That 2005 team had Dudek, Hyypia, Hamann, Baros (along with Carragher / Gerrard) all in the spine of the team, only really Alonso joined that spine... but the 2005 was Benitez's team, just like this is Dalglish's, for me. Obvious it takes a few years for a manager to really stamp his mark on a team and that is what Dalglish deserves time to do that.
-
With that logic Houiller's team won us the 2005 Champs League given he bought most of the squad and players.

The microcosm of our season. We batter them, hit the post, should have been 4 or 5 up and RVP gets two chances, they get two goals. We haven't been clinical and that is why I think we need a clinical striker more than anything this summer. Suarez / Carroll I'm sure will both be more clinical next season and we need more goals midfield, but we have to get another striker who is a real finisher. A finisher plus Lucas this season and we'd be easily top four.

Indeed The two performances vs Man City in the league cup, 3-0 vs Wolves, 6-1 vs Brighton, winning the league cup, 3-2 loss vs QPR a game we were brilliant for an hour, Blackburn away, Everton in the semi, Norwich 3-0 and Chelsea in the last game. All good performances on the whole and that is without mentioning other games we could have won such as Villa and Spurs at home.

I don't see why not, he has bought more 'hits' than 'misses': Enrique, Bellamy, Suarez, Coates, Carroll, Henderson all seem like 'hits' at the moment. We might have paid too much for them, but it was Comolli's job to negotiate the deals and that is problably why he lost his job. Adam is not really a 'miss', he is probably worth what we paid and is a decent squad player. Although I'd probably sell him this summer. Downing is the only signing that I think has been really poor and I'd classify a 'miss'.

Solves a lot of our issues: - We have three quality centre backs. - We have no good wide players really - Gerrard gets a free role
-
I'd like to see: Reina Skrtel Coates Agger Johnson Henderson Shelvey Enrique Gerrard Carroll Suarez

Some of the best football I have seen us play in the league since Evans was here, bar that one season under Benitez which we challenged for the title. We're the third best team defensively, depite not having our best defensive midfielder in Lucas. We have had lots of possession in games and passed it really well. We have created loads of chances, especially at home. Our problem has been finishing and we have not been clinical, that's why I like that tweet on the FSM twitter page as it says next season we will have similar performances but just better results and that is by just being more clinical. There have been the odd poor performance, but on the whole we have had loads of possession, passed the ball well, defended well and created lots of chances in most games. I know, but interesting that they retweeted it.

If we get rid of Dalglish after one full season, have won one trophy, getting to the final of another, having watched us play some great football without key players like Lucas / Gerrard for most of the season and the Suarez ban... then I would be gutted personally.

Stewart Downing's contribution so far this season.....

Maxi I think we should try and persuade to stay. He'll get more games next season with the Europa Cup and when he plays he often pops up with a goal or an assist. We have not used him enough this season and as a result we might lose a cracking little player. -

Redknapp tried to sign Downing before hasn't he? He could be persuaded. But yeah you're right with his wages, he might be tough to shift - thanks Comolli! -

How does it make sense keeping a player that isn't good enough? We'd be better off getting the money we can for him and reinvesting it into someone who could be an asset. -

I have watched Sterling all season for the reserves and the nextgen. He was the star in nearly every game and deserved got a step up to the first team. He is the real deal and IMO he is already better than Downing, but he just hasn't had the chance to prove it in the first team yet - due to age, not ability. -

Oh great you disagree with an opinion so you call someone an idiot! What insight and an uneccesary snide dig, which just makes you look silly more than anything. He is too young to play week in, week out - as we need to protect him and not over play him. But those who have watched him regularly for the reserves and seen his brief cameos for the first team can tell he is already an upgrade on someone like Downing. He can't do any than those Downing stats. So he can't not improve the squad. But this isn't about Sterling, it is about how poor Downing has been and anyone who thinks otherwise must be accepting mediocraty.
