Lifted from TLW: Here's the full article Déjà vu as Benitez lays down the law In the summer of 2004, Steven Gerrard gave an interview which exposed why the Gerard Houllier regime had run it?s course. Having been at the end of his tether for the best part of 18 months, disturbed by the lack of progress of his club, he decided in the immediate aftermath of Liverpool?s Champions League qualification enough was enough ?The next few weeks will be the most important in the recent history of this football club? he said ?I will be watching what happens very closely? Liverpool had just pipped Newcastle to the fourth Champions League spot, and while Houllier was hailing the achievement, the captain was mourning the fact such a routine expectation was now being perceived as worthy. There was a clear subtext to Gerrard?s comments then, and although he stopped short of demanding a change of manager, this was the inevitable consequence of any revelution. Had Liverpool not acted, they wouldn?t have avoided their narrow escape when Chelsea made the second of their three summer approaches for Gerrard between 2003-5. It?s impossible not to be reminded of the agitation and hunger for change Gerrard felt then when Rafa Benitez speaks now. On Thursday morning he effectively repeated what the captain had said three years ago. ?The club must act now?the next few weeks are crucial?if we don?t do more we can?t compete for the title?etc?? There are those who argue to dismiss the competency of the entire structure of the club takes the argument to the extreme, but the shambolic organisation of the Athens trip did nothing to help those in the firing line, even if UEFA carry most blame. In the early hours of the morning, as Benitez pondered what to say at Thursday?s press conference, he was strolling the streets around the team hotel because he had no room to sleep in. The facilities at the team?s base were described by management and players as shocking. When Liverpool?s representatives spent a couple of days in Athens after the semi-final, they were promised luxurious bedrooms which turned out to be unavailable when the team arrived. AC Milan encountered similar problems. In their Wisdom, UEFA picked a city with just one airport in the same week a major global pharmaceutical conference was held, block booking all the top hotels. Fiasco doesn?t do this organisation justice. Many players had to move out as soon as they arrived, with Benitez eventually giving up his room completely. ?If we don?t win, there will be bloodshed at this club? someone close to the manager warned on Tuesday evening, making it clear Benitez saw UEFA as partially but not exclusively responsible for the problems. The zeal for revolution this column reported on last week was evident in Benitez?s comments after the match. Wednesday night felt like a watershed for Liverpool in Europe. Rather than a climax of an exciting new era, it was the end of one. From the callous approach of UEFA to the depressing site of a minority of fans pushing down barriers (how do they qualify these actions when they?re wearing yellow justice stickers I may ask?), right through to the inappropriate preparations of UEFA and the club which were frankly embarrassing. The majority of right minded Liverpool supporters must have made the depressing return feeling wounded by their experience. I know many who wonder why they bother. The idea of the European Cup final is sometimes more exciting that the experience of it. George Gillett and Tom Hicks have spent six months commenting on their extraordinary purchase, but nothing exposes the cracks more than a cup final defeat. It?s now up to them to keep their part of the bargain and ensure on and off the pitch Liverpool is run like a club worthy of its stature. The focus is shifting to them, and it?s their job to shift it back to Benitez. They?ll do this by investing in the team and then taking care of the other under-funded departments. If they succeed, it?s then up to Benitez to prove how astute he is in the transfer market. The loss of chief scout Frank McParland to Bolton is a blow, especially since the jury is out on the track record of Eduardo Macia. His purchases must be up to scratch if the money is there, but he can be sure his dependency on the same Italian agents will be monitored if the signings aren?t good enough. The loss of Paco Herrera last summer was compared to the departure of Patrice Bergues in 2001 which had a destabilising impact. At the moment, worryingly, that still stands. Make no mistake, Liverpool head into the closed season a club deeply divided, with talented backroom personnel leaving and many key figures barely on speaking terms. If the summer of 2004 was considered one of the clubs most important in recent history, it may look like a picnic in comparison to what may follow.
-
The most worrying thing is that if this unstability causes us to miss out on transfer targets then we are fecked, only time will tell. Bascombe does has a tendency to be a bit a drama queen
-
Bascombe was on Talks**** this morning saying that Rafa is very frustrated, there are massive divisions between him and the upper management (Parry) and with foster gillet not being able to get his work permit till August is making matters worse (apparently Rafa is doing all his dealing with him and circumventing Parry) Anyone read the Echo in the morning, apparently there is more in there about Benitez's frustration with parry, stuff about how he cocked on the hotel in Athens and the fact that they are no longer even speaking to eachother. This is worrying I've got the feeling either Rafa or Parry will be gone before the start of next season, its not even a contest in terms who we all want to have booted out

How good is Malouda?, I saw him at the w/c last year but didnt really notice him do much

Gillet vows to back Rafa's pursuit of 'Snoogy Doogy'
JimmyF replied to Falconhoof 's topic in Liverpool FC

Javier hopes for Tevez move By Mark Buckingham - Created on 25 May 2007 Javier Mascherano says it is 'possible' that his fellow Argentine, Carlos Tevez, will move to Liverpool. Tevez is considering his future at West Ham United after admitting it may be time to join a major European club. He arrived at Upton Park last August, along with Mascherano, with the duo's controversial transfer eventually landing The Hammers with a £5.5million fine. Mascherano moved on again in January when he signed for Liverpool and he has impressed since playing regularly in the Premiership. Reports suggest the UEFA Champions League finalists want to reunite the South Americans, and the midfielder believes his compatriot would be a big hit at Anfield. "It's possible he will come," Mascherano told the Sun about the Tevez rumours. "I would love to have him by my side as a player and a friend. "After managing to keep West Ham in the Premiership, he has a lot of possibilities to move to a big club in Europe. "When we talk we avoid discussing moves, but I know he's talking about a probable move to Liverpool. "He would be a barbarian." http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=4...+for+Tevez+move Could tevez be the one who's in the bag already?

imo the decision to appoint this ref was uefa appeasing milan after they kicked up a stink b/c of the spanish ref that milan didnt want in the '05 final. they've won every single game he has reffed and we've lost most or all our games. Not the reason we didnt win but he was crap and didnt give us anything, gattuso should of been off before half for his tackles on riise and xabi
-
I think Aurelio will be more prominent next year if he stays clear of injury, hs can give us some serious quality from the left and compliment Alves very well
-
Its clear Rafa has wants no repeat of the Alves/Simoa/Milito.......debacles, as long as the money is there there shouldnt be a problem
-
Everyone is discussing who is coming who is going but that is a lot of speculation, I'm wondering will Rafa finally be able to implement the system that made Valencia one of the finest teams in Europe, the 4-2-3-1 system. I think one of our finest displays this year was against Arsenal (a lackluster Arsenal but still). I wonder finally if Rafa will have the right players to accomodate his favoured formation, I think the signing of Dani Alves maybe crucial as great as Finnan is he is getting on and we do need a more attacking emphasis from our fullbacks, the sight of Alves marauding down the right side would be amazing ------------------------------Reina-------------------------- Finnan (Alves hopefully)----------Carra----------Agger----------Aurelio--- ------------------Masch----------Alonso-------------------- (Lucas) ----------??????----------Gerrard----------??????--------- ----------------------------???????-------------------------- Thoughts
-
Dont get me wrong Simoa is class but I equate him more to being a Deco type playmaker then out an out pacy winger, its a matter of what you want, maybe we need that type of playmaker, to think of it we probably do
-
I worry about signing Simoa, class player no doubt but firstly his slender frame means he will take a long time to adapt to the english game and secondly from all the times I've seen him play he isnt beating players with a great burst or a ton of tricks, Querema maybe a better prospect for the premiership. But there is a dearth of of quality wide players around, so it will be very difficult to sign the right player
-
Likelihood is that the really big name targets we this summer are coming from Spain and their league doesnt end for a month so I dont know how Rafa will be able to wrap up all these deals quickly. I think we need 2 strikers on the premise that Bellamy and Fowler are leaving and maybe Crouch as well, I would hope they sign one out and out box player (Eto'o if possible) and one player who can play in hole. The biggest problem is the wings, there are only a handful of world class players who can play on the flanks out thereand we need to address both wings. We also need cover at CB

Redknapp talks s**** most of the time, if we had inquired Distin turned us down b/c he knows he would be a back-up player
-
I was going to post a topic on this idea, I couldnt sleep last night the thoughs of the game I couldnt get out of my mind and I know we all feel s**** right now but maybe in the long run losing wont be the worst thing in the world, 2 years ago we won it and the club didnt move forward like we had hoped it would of, this expectation that Rafa can do this whilst shopping in Tesco's when the elite shop at Harrods - Who knows that may have been a pervading thought again this year. Now everyones mind is clear in terms of what needs to be done, we all know this team need 2/3 class players that can put us over the top, if Rafa can secure these then we will be back again and again. Having this taste of defeat will serve them well the next time
-
Fowler and Gonzalez IMO, if Rafa plays one up front chances are Gerrard, Alonso and Masch all start thus Momo will be needed as cover
-
Unashamedly stolen from TLW but we could have Masch Pat-Eto'o playing for us next year
-
Alonso + Cash to Barca for Eto'o ??? Makes some sense
-
Eto'o is probably better physically suited to cope with rigours of the prem then those others. Mundo Deportivo is a sports daily in barca, i've seen them use stories from this paper on Revista on a few occassions. Credibility, probably the same as what marca is to real madrid
-
True but his pace and clinical finishing would be too much for most premiership defences, sometimes strikers need to be knobs, they need to have that selfishness/arrogance - It makes them what they are
-
fecking b******s
-
Probably right, I think he would score us the goals we need to win a league though, of the Eto'o, Villa, Torres trifecta he seems to be the most realistic target, I would say Villa is out of our price range

Another article today in the same paper http://translate.google.com/translate?u=ht...Flanguage_tools Imminent offensive of the Liverpool by Samuel Eto'o According to porteria? of Barcelona Televisió kept awake Monday in the program ?, the club ?network? will do ofertón to him to the Cameroun in fifteen days 1. According to BTV, the Liverpool it will offer to Eto'o 6 million to him euros by season 2. The English club would do to the Cameroun forward a contract to him by four campaigns 3. If crack gave ?yes?, the Liverpool would make him arrive at the Barça a supply of 40 million 4. According to the advanced thing by BTV, the English club it wants to speak with Eto'o without intermediaries 02/05/07 03:00 h.The enormous goleadora capacity of Samuel Eto'o turns to him now one of the European objectives of many clubs that approaches the moment for culminating its strategy of draftees facing the next campaign. According to the Porteria made sure Monday in the program ?? Barcelona Televisió (BTV), in the next days the Liverpool will make a direct approach to Samuel Eto'o to make him a supply stratospheric. The information that occurred yesterday in the program that presents/displays Pitu Abril in BTV offered very concrete details. In her one made sure that an emissary of the Liverpool will contact with Eto'o of direct form and without intermediaries of no type in next the fifteen days. This emissary of the club ?network? has the intention to do to the azulgrana forward a supply of 6 million net euros by season and a contract to him of four years. That is to say, very many money. If this envoy of the Liverpool obtained the approval of the azulgrana forward, immediately afterwards he would go to the FC Barcelona to do a supply to him of purchase. According to one kept awake in BTV, the club of Liverpool would offer to the azulgrana organization 40 million euros, the equivalent one to 6,655 million pesetas. This amount is far beyond the 24 million euros that the Barça paid by Samuel Eto'o in the summer of 2004 but it would not perhaps be sufficient to convince to the azulgrana organization, dice the enormous cache of a player who has marked differences in Spain and Europe since he signed by Barcelona. In addition, that nobody forgets that to the Barça always they request very many money to him when it is going to file a player, with which now would be in his right to request the maximum by his front star. In this hypothetical scene, the figures of Frank Rijkaard and Txiki Begiristain would receive the great protagonism. And it is that the Dutch trainer would have to put in the balance which loses and what it gains with the march of a forward by far goal but that dynamited ?cracked? clothes with its brutal one of Vilafranca. On the other hand, Txiki Begiristain would have to guess right with the substitute. In the market level are forwards by far but the azulgrana technical director would have to sharpen more than in previous seasons. This is not the first time that the Liverpool is interested in Samuel Eto'o. The own player admitted that, he himself year that fichó by the Barça, the club ?network? economically did a supply to him superior to the azulgrana

ETO'O IN THE MARKET? Arsenal, Liverpool, Inter and Milan love the forward Francesc Aguilar/BARCELONA 24/04/07 03:00 h.The continuity of Samuel Eto'o in the FC Barcelona absolutely is not guaranteed for the next season. The Cameroun continues being object of great desire of clubs European and the events of the last weeks could derive in an unexpected upset. Although the serious injury of menisco that underwent the 27 of September in Bremen has maintained him in the drydock for more than four months, his cachet remains intact. The ?Pichichi? of Liga 2005-06 and triple ?African Gold Ball? continues being one of the best forwards of the planet and, to its 26 years, it reunites many requirements to lead a new project. He is for that reason reason why clubs as the Arsenal and the Liverpool already have shown preference for ?Samu? to give a qualitative jump that allows them to plant face to Manchester United and Chelsea in the Premier. As much ?gunners? as ?reds? has formalized a supply to obtain the draftee of the forward. The adversary of the Barça in the final happened one of the Champions crosses a little while difficult and its economic stability depends on which the American millionaire Stan Kroenke takes control of the total control of the club. The Arsenal could sell to Thierry Henry and even turn to Eto'o its new jewel of the crown. The Liverpool also will have fresh money east summer after the purchase of the organization by the tycoons ?yankees? George Gillet and Tom Hicks. Rafa Benítez has thought about Eto'o to reinforce its offensive line of qualitative form. While, Inter and Milan also are very pending of which it can happen with crack azulgrana knowledgeable of which its condition of unquestionable no longer is endorsed by all the sectors of the FC Barcelona. The yield of Samuel since it landed in the Camp Nou in August of 2004 could have been better. Their goals have amortized amply the 27 million euros that the Barça paid to the two Majorca and there they are Ligas, a Spanish Glass of Europe and two Supercopas as it shows. However, the attitude of Eto'o, with their manifestations in Vilafranca towards the technician Frank Rijkaard and some of their companions, did not seat very well in the club. Not only in clothes there is a wound opened by the own Cameroun. In the director either there is no the ?quorum? of months back around the figure of Eto'o. The forward was defined in his day by Joan Laporta as ?the girl of my eyes? but some of the members of the Barcelonist meeting thinks that its presence in the group facing the future can entail other situations of conflict. Its new situation in the Barça also has pierced in the soccer mentideros, is why great clubs has reacted. The azulgrana club was reticent to listen to supplies by Samuel, like whom it received the season last coming from the Chelsea de Roman Abramovich, but the panorama has changed with the mentioned episodes caused by the own player. The Barça knows in addition that now it could obtain a considerable slice by a hypothetical crossing. The lack of affinity that Eto'o has with a part of its companions has been perceived by the African, that, according to inquired yesterday in the program ?Força Barça? of Td8, could already have requested its exit of the club. Although the liking of the Camp Nou values its contribution in the game land, its controversial declarations as much in hot as in cold, they have not either seated very well between sectors ?culés?. The club denies Md put itself in contact with the club and this one denied officially that it is thinking about transferring to no of his cracks. http://translate.google.com/translate?u=ht...Flanguage_tools I cant imagine without a takeover Arsenal could outbid us for Eto'o, but they could always dangle a Henry-Eto'o swap
