Thats the poorest performance I have seen from us in Europe in a long time. We shouldn't have to be cranking out the 'only half time' stuff because they were a poor side given confidence by the fact that, by our standards, we were even worse.

We were very poor up front. Kewell and Garcia in particular offered little or nothing all night. Benfica were there for the taking and we didn't have it in us.

Fowler's off the ball running was excellent. Kewell's crossing was Sunday football stuff always tried to beat the fullback (and failing) instead of a quick cross.

Upset yes, depressed no. We were much the better footballing side and controlled much of the game in a manner I haven't seen for many a year. We lost because we made a tactical error in the closing minutes. We will learn from it and push on.

I did think of adding a comment on the quality of the source (the fat man himself) but decided that others will make their own minds up on this. Simply reporting that he is still claiming that no clause exists - he went quite red in the face at the time so that may offer some clue.

At the press conference when Owen signed Shepherd was categorical that no such clause exists. He was still saying the same thing in private as late as two weeks ago.
