Alonso still doubtful for CardiffMay 12 2006 By Ian Doyle, Daily Post XABI ALONSO'S hopes of avoiding more Cardiff heartache remain in the balance. The Spaniard's chances of being included in tomorrow's FA Cup final against West Ham United improved yesterday. Alonso was able to join in parts of training for the first time after suffering strained ankle ligaments during the 3-1 win at Portsmouth on Sunday. Rafael Benitez has said he will not gamble on the 24-year-old if he fails to prove he has fully recovered from the injury. And that leaves Alonso facing a race against time to prove his fitness and prevent missing out on a second domestic cup final with Liverpool, having sat out the Carling Cup final defeat to Chelsea at the Millennium last season with a broken ankle.
