Anyway I think it would work against the system Chelsea play, I'm not a big fan of three at the back in general but I've just got an inkling on this one. Even though Pennants in form I still wouldn't start him in this game so it's either that or 4-4-2 with Gerrard on the right and Riise on the left which would be the same eleven and look pretty much like a 3-5-2 on the pitch.

We have played three at the back this season, can't remember which games but we have and more than once. Nice sarcasm, he's predictable that Benitez isn't he.

I think it's a possibility and he's used it before with some success at the latter stages of the CL.

If the alternative is keeping a crock and his massive wages at the club then you must be an Evertonian. I just can't see Benitez persevering with him next season or think he can afford to, talented player but way too injury prone

I reckon Zenden and Kewell are gone in the summer so I'd keep hold of Gonzalez and add a proven left winger.

I reckon Neill will be a good signing, like a lot of Aussies he's very competetive and will give us some competition for places in defence. As far as being a dirty b*****d is concerned I think we lack a few to be honest.

As good as Gerrard is I still think he's got a long way to go before breaking into our top five of all time.

Sami is the best central defender we've signed in a long time, one of Houlliers best signings imho. A fantastic servant to the club. Unfotunately the years seem to be catching up with the big fella but in Agger I reckon we've got a truly top class replacement!

You are of course correct, which makes him our top league goalscorer. I suppose you just can't please everyone though......

I can't believe people moaning about Kuyt. It's his first season in a new and foreign league in which he's already bagged five goals and linked up well and intelligently with the other players. Get a grip for f***s sake he's a great signing.

To be honest I reckon we lack a nasty player or two on the pitch and have done for a long time. Barton and Neill would be just the ticket.

I'm not sure Barton would be fourth choice, he's a very good player and we'd have four midfielders of real quality.

He looks like a promising long term replacement for Zenden. Hope he keeps it up and gets a contract, would be nice to see the academy start to bear fruit.

Alves is relatively unproven at international level and in the Champions League though, £15 Million would get us Alves but you're looking at twice that for Kaka.

I somehow can't see Rafa going for the Galactico type even with an unlimited budget. I think he'd rather go for the likes of Alves. Comparisons of Kaka and Alonso/Sissoko are unfair, Kaka isn't a defensive/holding midfielder.

Debatable, I'd say his distribution is better than Momo's though.

I'd agree that lot were good signings but there have also been a few stinkers too. What's encouraging is that they get shipped out sharpish if they don't cut it, unlike previous managers I could mention.

And the options are? Injured. I don't think he looked laboured at all and played quite well, the problems last night stemmed from the performances of Pennant and Garcia. Needs must and I'd go for the solidity Carragher would give us in the middle allowing the others to get forward.

Hardly a comparison you can make, GH walked into a side that were already Champions there. I'd fancy our chances against Lyon in the Champions League as well.
