The examples I gave above of Ford and GM with market caps of $15-16bn apiece were trying to indicate what you need is serious worldwide recognition to compare with LFC's brand. The only reason both those companies are valued so low is that they are struggling businesses where the equity in default would be effectively worthless. Nissan for example, a far smaller car manufacturer but not suffering financially, has a market cap of over $50bn. Whilst LFC have limited product revenue upside to speak of (in the grand scheme of things) they do have a brand that is potentially as well known as some of the largest companies in the world. If in any small way that brand can rub off on other investments, then you can see that there is some rationale behind the purchase from that side of things even if you make nothing from the football itself. Can you name a global business worth less than $20bn with a brand that might be similarly well known as LFC. I am genuinely struggling.
