We wouldn't have got £50m for Torres if we'd waited till the summer, every game he played for us was decreasing his value as it was clear he wasn't the same player. Another 6 months of that in a red shirt and we might have got a great deal less. 56 goals in 79 games in his first 3 league seasons. Wow 9 in 23 the season we sold him.

I still think this the sales money. Difference with this lot is that they can buy before they sell as they have cash flow. Skrtel, Carrol, Suarez and Reina should net us £60m bare minimum. Even with all the 4 mooted signings we haven't reached that yet.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Reina is going to go to Barca and take Valdes place whether he leaves or not. If a player said 'I am off next year' and a top class replacement was available now I'd get him in and bench the other guy.

The point I was making that the situations with Gerrard and Suarez are very similar and had Brendan finished with a European trophy in his first season, or finished in the top 4 and secured CL football, there is a very real prospect that he would have got to work with Luis for an extended period. Likewise, had Rafa finished trophy less and 7th there would have been a high chance he wouldn't have got to work with Gerrard for an extended period.

I think you are being harsh on Roy, if you've just been inside a 50ft square room with the 6 million names of men women and children who were murdered, winning a few football games wouldn't seem that important. But it is, to lots of people, and it's his job, so he has to get on with it. I think we have got the the stage of over-analysing everything he says now. He talks some right s**** but just because his waffles doesn't mean 'outside of football' he isn't able to talk sense.

I think winning the European Cup in his first season went a long way in influencing Gerrard to stay so you could say he made his own luck there.
