The point of international friendlies is not to rest Liverpool players. It's plain as day what people want but back in the real World, the players want to play for England and the England manager wants to be able to play his best side, for what, i think at least, are fairly obvious reasons. The more pitch time these players have together before the World Cup the better. At the same time he wants to remain sensitive to the sensibilities of club managers. Playing Gerrard for 45 minutes strikes this balance.

soz - i'm not really trying to get into this 'match fitness' debate. For me - it's 45 minutes of a friendly, his manager would rather he rested - courses he does. Club managers would prefer there were no Internationl footy games at all, i imagine. I think he will be fine for Saturday as i don't believe 45 minutes in a friendly is gonna take that much out of him.

why didn't the Liverpool training staff assess him before the England squad gathered, the medical staff tell the manager he wasn't fit to play due to fatigue and pull him from the squad, if it really is that f***ing simple?

if you can't see the benefit (albeit to Sven & England, not Liverpool, i grant you)of playing Gerrard with a different CM i'm amazed. How can that experience not benefit Carrick & England, should Lampard be ruled out of any matches?

this season Lampard has 7 yellows for chelsea + 1 for England Gerrard has 2 yellows for us they've played nigh on the same amount....

Cos Lampard wont get kicked or pick up yellow cards in Germany?

its not about knowing what to do its about giving players some pitch time together matches are different to training, remember?

and this way the players get bit of experience playing together before such an eventuality = it has some merit.
