There's some analogues to Juve seeling Zidane in all this. We all thought 'what will they do with that money? Instead, they went and spent an extra 30m on top of it. They overpaid on the market value for Nedved, Buffon and Thuram, offloaded Inzaghi while to help fund it but in hindsight no one cared. They got the players they wanted and ended up a better side for it. Overpaying for someone like Carroll and hopefully another player is less relevant in a situation like this. We have the money, it's about getting the players we want moreso than who can be bought cheaply.
