We should at least have tried. I blame FSG for that though. The "monitoring" concept seems to come from them and totally obliterates any chance of agility in the market. See also sitting on our hands when kvara was up for grabs. Same brief about monitoring.

Have to admit, I find it strange, from both our fans and others, why Wirtz is the one everyone is talking about. Isak was more expensive, supposed to be more proven in the league, and has been a fair bit worse. The fact that Ekitike looked ready to be first choice striker is more reason to consider if we should persevere.

A kinder interpretation might be that at this point he'd rather be a key player for spurs that they'll build a team around, than a squaddie at Liverpool. It's the replacement part that has people reluctant. Barcola aside, none of then names being proffered are ones that make me think "yeah, I'd prefer this guy to Gakpo."

Can't help but think it is also informed by Gakpo wanting to leave, for whatever reason. He's willing to join spurs, ffs.

The "problem" for pogba was that he was always branded a central midfielder who should be carrying that water and never contemplated putting him higher up the pitch. They had no problem giving Bruno Fernandes free reign as a 10, because no one except Amorim ever saw him as a midfielder.

Obviously. But if we are looking in context of a new manager's first game and the whole team not looking right, I am not looking at that performance and thinking "wirtz is a problem here". I am rather looking at it and thinking "not great, but something to build on here". The point is basically to not be a carragher or chrisbonnie and call it on matchday 1.

Not bad. Not stellar either and there's some unnecessarily wayward passes in there as well, but he kept things moving well enough I think.

I called bulls*** the moment they tried saying Scott is a defensive midfielder. Also a f***ing Joe Allen signing. grow up.

I can't help but see it as trying to wish his potential into actuality. There's nothing we've seen from him so far to suggest he's ready to be a regular starter.

The two was always with Gakpo leaving. His foot has been out the door all summer.

Cazorla is probably the best template of the lot. I mean I hope he turns out a lot better but in terms of style, role and position.

Bernardo silva has a fire in his belly Wirtz will never find. I think David Silva is perhaps a better template. Still needs to find a composed tenacity to match that but I think he could get there.

Easy. Rodgers. We've got virge, Alisson, Gomez (lol) and.... Yeah after that it's probably szoboszlai next, with Mac Allister and Gravenberch. Grim. Still miles better than Rodgers nadir.

His delivery looked pretty good to me last season. Crossing isn't something that'd concern me.

He looks like one would have thought Andy Carroll would have - Sorry and bummed out that he let himself be forced to sign for us because the club wanted the money. Except he did absolutely everything he could to be here and looks less interested in being here than Carroll.

Although the execution was erratic at best I actually thought the positions he took up and runs he made were more purposeful than under slot. Like you can see Iraola wants something from the fullback position.
