The best way to make your squad stronger is to buy players for the first XI. Previously first choice players become squad players or have a proper fight for a starting place. None of our first choice defence have a proper fight for their position. Mo has no competition for his position. We only have one proper defensive midfielder. Already Mac Allister and Szoboszlai if fit will play the vast majority of games.

So that would mean up until this summer we last bought a first choice goalkeeper in 2018, only 1 (Konate) first choice defender since 2018 and only 1 (Thiago) first choice midfielder since 2018. Lots of kids, the odd squad player and forwards.

you have the context club have lost 3 of last season's DM options (Henderson, Fabinho, Milner) and the first DM through the door is this lad with 2 weeks of the window left. it is a fecking shambles

feels like they have concluded there are no other decent holding midfielders that are available now that are not incredibly over valued. Feels like a stop gap, until the next Caceido/Lavia emerges. also feels like they have been caught unawares as to how the transfer market is changing I'd be amazed if this lad was near the top of any of the club's possible midfielder lists at the start of the summer
