Adams Held At Airport

Updated: 13:51, Saturday March 18, 2006

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has been detained at a Washington airport after he reportedly appeared on a terror watch list.

Mr Adams, who had celebrated St Patrick's Day with George Bush at The White House, was held for more than an hour.

The delay meant he missed a flight from Reagan National Airport to Buffalo for a speaking engagement.

The Department of Homeland Security said he was subjected to a thorough screening, but was not arrested.

A spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration said she could not confirm that Mr Adams was detained at the airport.

Jennifer Peppin said the log showed no record of him being detained or subjected to secondary screening.

However, chief of staff Chuck Eaton later said that Mr Adams was at Washington's other airport, Dulles International.

TSA officials were unavailable for comment on the report.

A Homeland Security official said Mr Adams had left the Washington area, but he would give no further details.

Congressman Brian Higgins, who had invited Mr Adams to speak, said he "should not have been on a terror watch list".

Earlier, Mr Adams joined Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and other Irish visitors at a White House St Patrick's Day ceremony.

Last year, President Bush barred all Northern Ireland leaders from the St. Patrick's Day event.
