I suspect that Benitez will look for someone taller and stronger, who can hold the ball up - and score goals

not easy to find such a player, granted, and I'd be tempted to pay the money for a guaranteed goalscorer alone. But Rafa might think that £18m (or whatever) is too much for someone who isn't exactly what he's looking for

it won't be 18mill and like you i can't think of this ideal player. He wanted him in the summer

how much will it be? Why would the Barcodes sell for less than he's worth? Is there any truth in the release clause rimours and if so, how much is specified? And even if we did invoke the clause, would we be censured for 'tapping-up' as we were with Ziege when he told us about his clause?

Benitez would have taken Owen at the right price - but once again he's not likely to be available at the right price

My initial thoughts on the striker situation would be to get shot of Cisse and Nando (Obviously at a loss), bring back Pongolle and Owen so as that our strikeforce reads: Owen, Crouch, Fowler, Pongolle. All a bit too ideal I know but I think there's goals in that.

That list doesn't fill me with optimism to be honest. I think 12 million for someone who is prone to injury isn't really that good a piece of business. Robbie may get us a few goals but he is unlikely to improve significantly over the next season or so. I see Crouch as nothing more than a squad player, being able to offer something different in the last 20 minutes of a game and Pongolle may come back to be a really useful player but would you at this stage of our development pin all your hopes on him?

I don't think it's unrealistic at all. The only problem with Owen coming back (in footballing terms) is that he's injured a lot when he's the regular starting striker. So for a good 3 months of the season, we'd be limited to Crouch, Fowler, and Pongolle. There's some considerable uncertainty in the strike rate of our strikers in that scenario. Granted they can't do any worse than this year.
