Anti-date rape nail varnish

I've just read this BBC article about 4 students who are developing a new nail varnish that changes colour when dipped into a drink containing date-rape drugs. Now, I can see a few issues with the idea, namely not all women like to, do and should wear nail varnish, ignores male rape. But the article goes on to show the backlash on Twitter about the idea, including these comments:

Is it me or are those comments extremely unhelpful? Yes, of course the onus isn't on women to avoid getting raped and yes, of course there needs to be massively more education around the issue but these lads are just trying to help aren't they?
