Because Agger was out for the majority of the season and above all because Alonso had two lengthy spells on the sidelines, the second of which left him out of sorts for a few games.

 

Oh and Crouch and Benayoun were under-utilised.

He came back to himself towards the end of the season. He was phenomenal at anfield v chelsea in Champs league.

 

Gerrard and masch should have been able to hold the fort without him. both really good players
