CBS Man Denies Trying To Blackmail Letterman

A CBS producer has denied trying to blackmail talk show host David Letterman for $2m (£1.25m).

It comes as Letterman admitted on his programme that he had sex with female staff.

Robert Joel Halderman has been charged with attempted grand larceny.

The defendant, who is a producer for the true-crime show "48 Hours", pleaded not guilty at a court in Manhattan.

He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prisoon if convicted.

On Thursday, Letterman stunned millions of viewers by admitting having sex with female workers.

The popular host of "Late Show with David Letterman" on CBS said he went to the authorities after receiving a package threatening to reveal the details.

Halderman demanded $2m last month in exchange for not releasing information that would ruin Letterman's reputation, say prosecutors.

Authorities say the plot prompted a sting operation at a posh New York hotel, with Letterman's lawyer secretly recording Halderman's threats.

Halderman appeared at Letterman's Manhattan home on September 9 to deliver a one-page screenplay outlining the affairs, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.

The suspect also delivered a letter saying the star would need to pay "a large chunk of money" or else Halderman would give Letterman the "screenplay treatment" that would lead to a "ruined reputation," Morgenthau said.

Letterman married long-time companion Regina Lasko in March. The couple have a son born in 2003.
