General literacy levels

Maybe it's always been the case, but brought more into focus by the mediums of facebook and texting etc... but does anyone else feel or have noticed that the literacy levels, particularly amongst the younger generations are apalling?

Do they spell stuff incorrectly on purpose as some form of 'netiquette'?

Its interesting that the 20-22 year olds we knock about with have a completely different way of texting or talking on msn than people my age. Its only about 6 years difference but my mates my age will always type everything correctly but i need a translator to make out texts i get from some people i know. Yet when we talk in person we are all on the same level

I don't know whether this is becuase they got mobile phones and that when thery were 12/13 rather than later like me. But i agree that it doesn't seem any more convenient most of the time

saying 'should of' instead of 'should have' is well trendy

So 'well trendy' that there are, shamefully, two examples in Nick Peet's Liverpool articles in the Echo tonight, plus a 'who's' instead of a 'whose'. It's not pedantic to expect better from a newspaper, as opposed to a forum contributor. An email to the Editor is on its way.
