Digital SLR cameras

I'm thinking about getting an SLR and am looking at a Nikon D40 or D50 - having no experience of digital SLRs at all it would be good to get some advice from those in the know.... is it best to buy the body separately from the lens or is the standard (is it 18-55) lens decent enough? If it's better to buy separetely, which lens should I go for? Also is the D50 significantly better than the D40?
