The Conservatives today expelled a leading young Tory activist from the party for boasting about dressing up as Madeleine McCann at a new year party.

 

Caroline Spelman, the Tory party chair, removed Matthew Lewis from the party after it emerged that he had discussed on his Facebook page plans to wear a blonde wig, "pink pyjamas, a teddy bear and a vial of fake blood" to the event.

 

Other figures from the organisation joined in the joke about the missing five-year-old, with one responding on Facebook: "Is this a cunning (Baldrick style) plan to obtain the reward money?"

 

Spelman described the behaviour of Lewis, a member of the party's youth wing, Conservative Future, as "totally unacceptable".

 

She said: "This offensive behaviour is not only shocking but intolerable and completely unacceptable. There is no place for this sort of person in the party."
