GB or UK?

It's being debated here whether the correct 2-character country code for Britain (i.e. "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland") is 'GB' or 'UK'.

 

There's a theory that GB refers to just 'Great Britain' and thereby excludes Northern Ireland. This would imply that 'UK' is the correct code, however...

 

AFAIK, GB is used most of the time (on Car Stickers, VAT numbers, etc.) but not always (.co.uk e-mail addresses, for example)

 

Is there any conclusive answer to this?
