Anyone watch the 65 cup final over the weekend?

It was shown on LFCtv, first time I'd seen it in full. Never realised before what a completely one-sided game it was - we made Leeds look like also rans. I've seen that before in the FA cup final but not between two top teams. I can't remember any FA cup final being played in such miserable conditions either.

I've seen it before and it was a great performance, 1974 was also very one sided too but did Newcastle count as a top side then ?

They most certainly did, so much so in fact that I think the bookies made them slight favourites. What Malcolm McDonald wasn't going to do to us wasn't worth doing. Newcastle simply had to turn up to win etc etc. Makes it all the sweeter when it's like that.

I saw it live at the time! Scrappy game with lots of poor football by today's standards

I love the fact that 43 years hasn't dulled your memory on how irritated you were by the poor standard :D

I was there! I was a 19 year old squaddie and I won a ticket in my unit's raffle (every military unit used to get tickets for the cup final in them days don't know if it still happens, I somehow doubt it!). Hitch - hiked from Aldershot with a mate and arrived at Wembley with about 2 shillings in my pocket (20 pence for all you sprogs!). Got into a pub near the ground, had a real skin-full - them days folk would buy servicemen a drink instead of abusing them like today!

When we went to the ground, I remember another Scouser coming up to us and asking if we had tickets, when we said that we had he asked us to make room as we went through the turnstile so that he and his mates could squeeze through/under the turnstile. We did this and I'm pretty sure that about 10 of them got in. Them days once through the "outer" turnstile at Wembley there was just a wide entrance (about 12 foot wide) into the ground proper from a large "corridor" that went right round the ground with just a couple of stewards checking tickets, so all they had to do was run past them and straight into the crowd. I reckon that 100s, if not 1000s got in like this that day!

Anyway, I didn't remember much about the game - was too p*ssed, but can remember St John's goal, right in front of us, as though it were yesterday. I've seen it on TV a few times since, and it brings back happy memories - Shankly with his scarf, The Saint dancing with his socks down, Ee Aye Adio being belted out - happy days!! :woohoo::metal::drink:

I was a football purist even at 9 living in a hovel in Speke! Anyway, football just never looks as exciting in black and white
