Elisha_Scott Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 If you had to name 6 of the Kings most influential or important performances over the years for us, what would they be and why?
fred milne Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Bruges 78 and Chelsea 86 are two obvious ones.
John am Rhein Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Game at Anfield vs. Watford, who were our main challengers for the title surprisingly enough, in (I think) 1982/83. I think we won 3-1 with Dalglish at his best and setting up a goal for Ian Rush with one of the best passes ever seen.
marty Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 last eleven games of the 85/86 season when he picked himself to play again and we went unbeaten and won the double
Miracle@Istanbul Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 We played at Woodison in his first season as player boss i believe it was, anyway it was about 6 games into the new season and our start had not been great, but the king scored a cracker after 20 seconds and we were 3 up at half time. Everton came back into it and scored 2 in the second half but we hung on and won 3-2, kenny even missed a great chance in the last few mins, a great and famous victory.

Great turn, called him 'iron crutch' for a while after that... but their challenge was over by that point... so not a massive game in this context

Guest Pedro Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Game at Anfield vs. Watford, who were our main challengers for the title surprisingly enough, in (I think) 1982/83. I think we won 3-1 with Dalglish at his best and setting up a goal for Ian Rush with one of the best passes ever seen. Oh God yes, I remember that pass. Turned his man just around the half-way line on the right and played this ball forward to Rush that seemed to bend back towards Rush past the Watford defender tracking back after Rush. What a player (Rush wasn't bad too ).
John am Rhein Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Was it goal of the season - or at least one of the contenders for it?
fred milne Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Isn't this the "creator supreme" goal we are talking about?
Elisha_Scott Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Isn't this the "creator supreme" goal we are talking about? It is, it was already on my list. Genius it was, bit like Kaka's pass against us in Istanbul
JRC Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Oh God yes, I remember that pass. Turned his man just around the half-way line on the right and played this ball forward to Rush that seemed to bend back towards Rush past the Watford defender tracking back after Rush. What a player (Rush wasn't bad too ).No-one will ever convince me that, as the ball curved and slowed down to the perfect pace, setting itself directly into Rush's stride, that it didn't position itself with a little arrow on the top of it pointing towards the corner of the goal where Rushie was supposed to (and did) hit it. It's not just that it was so immaculate in conception and execution - it's that the King could not have had any real opportunity to weigh up the positions of the other players, or the available angles, until the moment he turned the defender and played the pass. It was that ability to have such a detailed, wide-ranging and accurate vision of the positions and possibilities in an instant that marked him as a true genius.
David Hodgson Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 If you had to name 6 of the Kings most influential or important performances over the years for us, what would they be and why? Oooh, good question. Can we say just 'really good performances' too ? A personal fave of mine was a hat-trick he scored at Anfield against Man City. I think it was roughly boxing day 1983. He was getting on, but he was absolutely superb that day, even setting the goals aside. Apart from the obvious ones , where he scored in finals etc, I remember a stunning display when we beat title chasing Ipswich 4-0 at Anfield, in 1982. Others : 1978 semi against Borussia in the European Cup ; FA Cup semi, and that wonder dribble against Man utd in 1979, in the 2-2 draw ; 2 late goals at Anfield to beat Villa in about 1980, I think. ah, the memories .....

John am Rhein Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 1978 semi against Borussia in the European Cup That was the night Jimmy Case treated Munching Gladbach defenders like skittles
Tommy Cockles Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 mmm people seem to be having trouble naming 6 not sure why.... 78 Ar*enal - Charity Shield ran them ragged and scored a sublime goal putting O'Dreary on his Ar*e78 Bruges - not a great performance but he won the game & the EC in his 1st season82 Spurs - beat them 3-1 to win the league, he put us 2-1 up and "nearly jumped into the Kop"82 Everton - Rush stole the show with his 4 goals but Kenny ran the show, and had a great header chalked off wrongly at 0-083 Everton - 1st derby as P/M ang a screamer in the 1st min at the Gwladys86 Chelsea - scored the goal that won the league
