Is there a doctor in the house?

Long story cut short, I've been suffering huge amounts of pain for the last 2 years or so, usual meds - morphine, duogesic patches, methadone, etc and I'm an out patient for a "pain team" clinic. My next appointment isn't for another 2 months but recently I've met this girl who swears by something called pain therapy - apparently the theory is that you don't take any meds for 2 weeks, suffer the inevitable pain and at the end of the 2 weeks your threshold is raised so much that your usual levels of pain seem like a minor head ache.

Has anyone any experience of this? My GP has basically said don't even think about it, but if it gets me off the meds then it is worth thinking about. Does the theory seem sound, or is it a load of new age nonsence?
