Having this chat in the pub last night. What do you reckon? Top two have to be Torres and Drogba I reckon but there's a few names after that - Rooney, Berbatov, Adebayor, Voronin.

Torres

Drogba

Rooney

In that order.

Rooney for his effectiveness and not for Goal scoring.

I thought it was Rooney`s lack of effectiveness that holds back his goal scoring abilities.

If Rooney is one of the three best strikers in the PL its a sad state of affairs.

League matches and goals:

02/03: 33 - 6

03/04: 34 - 9

04/05: 29 - 11

05/06: 36 - 16

06/07: 35 - 14

07/08: 26 - 12

The real great strikers have got a better than 1 in 2 ratio, Rooney is not even close to gettin 1 in 2, he is closer to 1 in 3.

I meant his contribution to the team. And he mostly plays as a second striker anyways(Interchanging with Tevez & Ronaldo).

Rooney isnt really a striker though is he? Hes a forward really, not a lead the line striker like Drogba, Torres or Van Nistelrooy.

Anelka has got to be up there, but it hasnt really happened for him yet at Chelsea.

Ronaldo?

not a striker.

not a striker.

He's a forward, football player who can play a few positions and one of them is up front, which he has often done, this season in particular. Or are you just talking about target men and penalty box poachers? A very narrow look at things I must say, far more variation to forward play these days, not every club even plays with one.

Dunno? Topic says top striker - I really wouldnt class Ronaldo, or Rooney as strikers.

Strikers do their best work predominantly up front and can lead the line on their own. There are plenty of great forwards who cant do that.

Torres

Tevez

Didier Dragqueen.

He most certainly does not have to be up there.

Is that a fact?

But I would say that Ronaldo can and does do that role when required, and very well, probably better than Rooney, but its not actually one that Utd use much. Like Gerrard, he can play several positions to a high level, and which one is his best is a debate.

I like to think so.

anything to add, or is that just the end of the debate?

Does Ronaldo ever play up front though? Right of midfield isnt he the majority of the time.

Erm... I don't like him very much?

No seriously though, his goal record really isn't that impressive. He's had chances at top teams all over Europe and invariably ballsed it up. He's got an ego the size of Jupiter which has cost him numerous chances of success. A lot of Liverpool fans get stuck on the fact that we didn't buy him and did buy Diouf, when we made 50% of a right decision. His goal scoring record wasn't much to write home about at us and I don't think Ged and Thompson got rid of him just for the hell of it. The mistake was in buying Diouf, not in getting shot of Anelka.

And constantly hearing about his "unbelievable" performance against Newcastle for us has caused me numerous headaches.

He scored about 90 goals in his 180ish appearances for English teams, pretty good that is.

Obviously hes got the whole personal baggage issue but I think hes a massive threat in any side. Only have to look at Bolton since he left.

For Portugal quite often, for Utd one of three forwards, spending as much time as any of them playing through the middle in games, you dont see him playing wide very often these days.

Lescott.

9 goals in 73 is f***ing s**** for a striker.

Still better than Voronin though.

If Rooney can get 15+ a season as a forward/second striker I think that's a good return any way you look at it. Defintiely one of the best in the league.

As far as out and out strikers go, it's hard to look beyond

Torres

adebayor and Drogba though.
