I have a question mate.

In the Dutch 2nd division the first team are promoted and the next 8 teams have a play off to see who gets the second promotion spot. How comes Go ahead eagles are in this play off when they finished a place below Emmen ?

I'll have a quick guess that the stadium is not up to standard. This has happened a couple of times in Scotland and the Conference.

I was thinking this myself, but wasn't sure. Their play off system is more complicated than the yank sports mate.

The season is divided into eight periods. Every period has a winner and that winner earns the right to the play offs. I'm not sure of the exact semantics, but i believe if the winner of a period has already earned rights then it transfers the next team. So technicaly, a team can finish bottom and still get promoted.

I hate the play off system.

It's truly bizarre - only beaten for nuttyness by the playoffs for a european spot.

If you think that's confusing wait till you hear who gets the CL and UEFA spots:

for the 2nd CL spot:

2nd vs 5th

3rd vs 4th

winners play a final, winner takes 2nd CL spot. Loser takes 1st UEFA Cup spot

losers play a final, winner takes 2nd UEFA cup spot. the loser (the megaloser if you like, having lost both games already) gets another chance later

for the 3rd UEFA cup spot

6th vs 9th

7th vs 8th

winners play each other

winner of that plays a final against the mega-loser of teh first batch

the winner gets the third spot

the loser of that game gets an intertoto application

there's a bit more to it with the Cup final also giving a UEFA ticket and thus influencing the play-offs, but i really dont want to go in to that

i think it's madness

As we walked into the Ajax Stadium a few weeks back, the first thing we saw was a massive banner which read "f*** THE PLAY OFFS" which was nice. They explained how clubs are now having to play play offs for the second Champs League spot and it hasn't gone down very well. Is there any special reason why Ajax play Madness one step beyond every time they score, or do they just like the song?.

don't know, don't care.

music after goals should be outlawed, it's football, not basketball (or some other nondescript american sport)

Quite agree, was just wondering if there was any special reason.

Ever been at the Gelredome when Vitesse score (rare, I know)? They play Lionel Richie's 'Dancing on the ceiling' at a volume that makes your eyes cross and ears bleed. I saw Nijmegen playing Utrecht a while back, and when Nijmegen scored, they played something that sounded like a cross between the Steptoe theme and 'Tulpen van Amsterdam' and they all started singing this oompah sh*t - both hilarious and scary at the same time.

ok, you asked for it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eerste_divisie

the dutch version goes into more detail:

8 first division teams hoping to gain promotion play in the "nacompetitie". this has three round:

round 1:

game A: team 5 vs team 8

game B: team 6 vs team 7

round 2:

game C: winner A vs team 17 from the "eredivisie"

game D: winner B vs team 16 from the "eredivisie"

game E: team 4 vs team 1

game F: team 2 vs team 3

round 3:

C vs D

H vs F

The winners of the round 3 games play in the top class next season.

Only today have i realised the full exent of play off madness. In case a home&away play-off tie is even after both games are played there's a replay. This might not sound odd, but the definition of "even" is, cause goal difference doesn't count!

Exapmple 1:

Game 1: Team A 1-0 Team B

Game 2: Team B 7-0 Team A

Result: Tie is a draw. There's a replay (at Team B's stadium due to superior goal difference)

Exapmple 2:

Game 1: Team A 1-0 Team B

Game 2: Team B 1-0 Team A

Result: Tie is a draw. There are penalties to decide which team has the advantage of hosting the replay.

Mad or what! I'm convinced it's just a cunning ploy to confuse foreigners.

Just the consequence of a certain weed being legalized. What sober mind (or even an alcoholic one?) could've managed to devise it?
