But when we defend set pieces, particularly those from far away from the pitch, we seem to be defending deeper and deeper.

Is this just me thinking that, or is it the case? Thinking about the goals yesterday, the headers were won on the edge of the six yard box but the freekicks were 40 yards from goal or more. If you don't clear it in those areas (and even if you do) there's not much of a chance to put things right. I think that this is what has made us look vulnerable at times. It happened against wigan, and twice yesterday. And the mancs.

There's my theory number 1.

what is your proposed solution to it? since we've conceded (at least before last night) fewer goals from dead-balls than every other team in the division?

Think you may be right. We're also usually very strong on the second ball, more alert. Seems to be a bit of panic creeping in, which in a weird way makes players freeze and drop too deep?

i agree with you. Its been the second ball every time. Wigan was the same

Players aren't sharp enough

Whoever the organiser is (Carra? Reina?) gets the line higher.

The keeper takes a more active role in cleaning out anything near the 6 yard box.

However, takes discipline to do that when you feel that a goal is likely to come. `

that would in theory work. unless an opponent does that allardyce thing of standing offside and then legging it backwards when the kick is about to be taken.

there's another option which is that our players get more aggressive and block opponents' runs. this doesn't have to be man-for-man marking, just block the guy in your zone when he attempts to get a run up.

but then one of our most fundamental problems is that we're too f***ing nice all over the park.

That's only really relevant for shots. You just ignore him for crosses.

That's a very big area of improvement in the last couple of years, IMO. Not so long ago we were extremely poor at that.

Any talk about last night's set pieces should take into account the fact that Aston Villa, being managed by Martin O'Neill are probably among the best in the business in that respect.

absolutely, we said that during the match. leicester were always a threat at set-pieces. and they've scored plenty this season from them.

arbeloa should have been off 5 minutes before that freekick, he couldn't move and he didn't get to the second ball. rafa didn't help there.
