Just a quick question but what would everybody think if old whiskey nose was offered the job to become the lfc manager after Fagan? Would he have lasted as long as he has at united or would he have suffered the same fate as Souness? I know the man is extremely bitter towards us and maybe it is because he was knocked back for the Liverpool job at the time you never know but would we have been the dominant force in England during the 90's. The reason I ask this is because he went to united around the same time as Fagan left Liverpool if I remember correctly and if that’s the case why wouldn't the board at the time look at Fergie and consider him as the next manager seen as he was successful in Scotland.

I know he is a w***** but back then there was no grudge between us fans and a certain my Ferguson.

King Kenny didn't do too bad at liverpool did he

Are you kidding the man had the greatest Liverpool team in history at his disposal (88) and if not for Hillsbrough he would of continued and im sure have won us plenty of more Leagues. I was just asking a hypothetical question but i would give my right and left nut for Kenny to have stayed.

Ferguson would have done well - as Dalgish did - so he'd hardly have suffered the same fate as Souness.

It was a bit later than Ferguson left Aberdeen to go to Man U. Fagan's last game for us was Heysel (May 1985). Ferguson didn't go to Man U until Atkinson was hounded out of Old Trafford about a year and a half later. The 1986 World Cup - in which Ferguson managed Scotland to a 1st round exit - came in between.

I think Ferguson's grudge goes back to when Dalglish took the p*ss out of him in the (?) 1987 season.

Just like 1995 then

I always thought Kenny had the measure of Fergie and had he stayed Fergie would not have had it his own way in the 90's.

Kenny Dalglish on Demento

When all the sycophants call the tw4t "Sir" Alex, Kenny still calls him Fergie.

I always thought he hated us since we battered Aberdeen all over the place.

If Fergie had been Liverpool manager we would all have loved him.

Does he have a grudge about that though?

We beat them fair and square.

He did seem to have a bias against Hansen when picking Scotland teams, though, so perhaps you're right.

I agree. Everything else aside, he's a top drawer manager. Dunno where his bitterness comes from but hey, who cares.

There are a number of reasons for Ferguson's grudge......firstly we thumped his then highly regarded Aberdeen side 5-0 in 1980 in the EC..........also his first 5 years at ManU were under the shadow of complete domination by Liverpool (& Arsenal).

I find it a bit hard to believe Ferguson holds grudges just because certain teams (us and Arsenal) were better than his. In the case of Arsenal, I think there was a lot of animosity because of the way George Graham's side used to try (and succeed) and rough them up physically.

With us, I think most of his bitterness has actually come to him from the club and it's scum fans.

I think the "knock them off their f***ing perch" quote proves otherwise.

That was after the event, though wasn't it? His anti-Liverpool obsession had been well established by then. Didn't he say something about 'having knocked us of our f*cking perch' (mid 90s)? Whereas in fact if anyone did that it was George Graham.

Ferguson said his first aim at United was to knock us off our perches. Kenny and Ferguson fell out over his failure to choose Hansen when he was Scotland manager, Kenny pulled out of the '86 World Cup squad.

Kenny was appointed Liverpool Manager in May 85, Ferguson MAnc manager November 86.

to be honest i thought i would get slaughtered having brought this thread up but its good to have everybodys opinion about it. Yes fergie would of done well for us if this would of happened but in Kenny which was proved time and time again we had the better manager at the time. As much as a good manager fergie is he is still a toss pot

I'm always amazed that I keep seeing that quote in papers as if Ferguson actually did knock us off our perch when in fact Arsenal and Leeds had gotten there before him.

If Fergie would have become our manager there is every chance he would have sustained the success. Having said that, I thought there was every chance Kenny would have done too. He certainly seemed to have the measure of Ferige and Kenny started off fantastically well for us as player/manager and then manager. After Hillsborough he couldn't get his spark back and stood back from the game (and I'm not criticising him for that).

it's interesting to see how Ferguson handled the like of Giggs, Scholes, Sharpe, Beckham etc compared to Evans with Fowler, McManaman, Redknapp and whoever.
