so far today I've listened to two all time classic music tracks - Suppers Ready (Genesis) and Heavy Horses (Jethro Tull) - which are very very good, but undoubtably attract a tag of 'naff' or 'dated' - I even found myself thinking exactly that.

So what is it which makes these and other tracks dated while other equally old stuff might not be considered as such (although this is obviously highly subjective)?

Is it the use of instruments (hammond organs, flutes, etc.) which are rarely heard nowdays. Is it something about the singing style? Lack of the kind of imagery and charisma typically associated with big musical names these days? Other?
