Solid wood flooring

I've moved house about 5 months ago and have been renovating like a crazy man trying to get the place sorted before our first child is born in May. I am now at the stage of putting down the flooring.

 

We would like to put solid wood floors throughout most of the downstairs but since it will include a large entrance hall, the living room and possibly the kitchen I need it to be as hard wearing as possible. White oak seems to be the one that most of the sellers are pushing me towards so can any of you advise if you have oak flooring and if so is it hard wearing? If not, any suggestions will be more than welcome.
