I can see us selling Pennant to getafe next season - just watch the useless git go and score 20 ;)

how many has morientes got now? i'm made up for him. he worked his nuts off when he was with us, it just didn't work out for him.

Must of been watching a different Morientes to me then. The only times I can remember him putting any effort in was Charlton away and Fulham - other then that it looked like he couldnt be arsed.

Quality player, poor for us.

Can't say I'm "made up for him", more frustrated that he didn't come here and score.

As Rory said, I'd rather have Kuyt.

Spot on! And as Anny says - it's not as if our current batch are having a dry spell, is it? Lot of time for El Moro - it didn't work out as we would all have wished but it wasn't through lack of trying.

I'd suggest you were watching a different Morientes then. He worked very hard here, often tackling back in the middle, winning the ball and setting up attacks for us. I'm more than happy with Kuyt too, but that shouldn't demean the fact that Morientes gave it his best shot.

he never moved!! I thought off the ball he was shocking. Never ran the channels, always wanted the perfect pass. I just don't remember this tackling back and setting up attacks, I just remember going to games like Soton away or Brum away, watching us get dicked and Morientes standing there watching the game completely passing him by.

Nearly all my mates agree with me on that when we talk about him .. Then you come on here and people sing his praises.

Strange how people interpret the game differently. Interesting though.

Do yourself a favour - go on You tube, type in Morientes Liverpool and see if they have any examples. The two crackers he made himself and scored against Borro, for example, the set up where he got the ball in the left hand channel, cut inside two defenders and set it up with the outside of his right foot for Riise to score against City (or Portsmouth). Consensus here on this site before revisionism sets in was that he worked hard for the cause...I have no idea where this 'he never moved' rubbish comes from.

You defo watched a different player to me. Me and my mates often agreed if Morientes had managed the goal return that Cisse had, he'd still be with the club, because his attitude was spot on (in fact last seasons cup semi v chelsea summed up the difference between the two of them in terms of attitude). He was certainly short of confidence and imo, he didn't like getting hoofed from behind and getting nothing for it. in many a game I'd watch his head go down after the 3rd or 4th time he'd get taken out and get nothing. Some players are just not cut out to play in certain leagues - his domestic form lowered his confidence so he even struggled in european games in the end. But I have no doubt effort was not one of the reasons he failed.

and as for your kuyt comaprision - i'd sooner have kuyt too. he's clearly more effective in our league than morientes and he's younger too. however, it doesn't mean i'm not happy it's working out for morientes. in fact it's best of both worlds imo - we have a player who's doing the business for us and an ex-player has been able to go and find himself a decent side and get back to his true level in an environment that suits his style more.

Yeah I forgot about Boro fair play - remember those goals - all the more frustrating because it shows what he could do.

The never moved stuff seemed the general consesus for most of the games I was at anyway. Most people I speak to are pleased we got rid when we did because too often the game just passed him by.

Don't really post on here much so don't really know about the revisionism that has set in on here ;)

and i'm pleased we got rid of him too - it didn't work out with him. it doesn't mean he didn't try to make it work. i think the lad himself was gutted it didn't work.

Yeah thats fair enough, I suppose you've got a more positive outlook on what he did for us. For me it was moments of class in amongst periods of mediocracy. For me a striker putting effort in is someone closing down defenders, always wanting the ball and always moving off the ball - Kuyt does that, even Crouch does it most of the time, Bellamy does that - I can't fault any of those 3 for effort. For me Morientes just didn't do it - fair enough he's quite old, but he got more than enough games to prove himself and all to often it was the same old story, especially away from home. The league didn't suit him, that is true, but I still think he could of made it work, as the games vs Fulham, Charlton and Boro showed - they were like watching a different player to the one that seemed to usually turn up.

Bit of a s*** discussion anyway really because he doesn't play for us anymore... but still - I'm bored of everyone picking faults in our current strikers ;)

and all 3 of those teams are probably the least aggressive defensive sides in the country and less likely to hit him with a tackle from behind.

as i said earlier i'm happy he's gone. without doubt kuyt is an improvement for our team and comparing morientes in terms of work rate with kuyt is plain unfair and the lad probably even out works ian rush's contribution at his working best!

we'll have to agree to disagree about him!

According to the Balenthia offish:

Nando played 28 (1926 mins) scored 16. A goal every 120 mins and no yellows.

and just for the record:

Villa played 30 (2221 mins) scored 14. A goal every 159 mins with 6 yellows along the way.
