January transfer window - any money there?

Im not 100% sure of the financial position we're in, we could get some money for Cisse but im not sure if thats been budgeted for with Kujt, but if there is money there for Rafa what positions would you like to see strengthened.

1 possible that has been discussed here is a swap with Hyppia and Lucas Neil, i wouldnt be against that even though Sami has been a great player for us we have Agger who needs a run, Neil will provide that cover at CB plus also cover right and left back. Right back is a position we dont really have covered.

It looks as if SWP is available for 10 million and id really like us to go for him. Im sure hed rather be playing here over West Ham but of course we all know how tough dealing with Chelsea would be. We're still short on the right and im not convinced with Pennant and wouldnt be against moving him out already if we can get 4-5 million for him and bring in SWP.

Not covered, thought the young lad that played in the Carling cup Peltier was good, but would Neil go in before Steve Finnan? I doubt it, so where would he go?

What planet are you on? SAMI still has LOADS to contribute. We're gonna get Neill for buttons. Where are we getting £10M from? Finally, who in their right mind is gonna pay £5M for Arjen Pennant? DREAM ON!

Calm down buddy i was only asking the question, we are due around 8 million for Cisse as i said in my post im not sure if that money has already been spent on Kujt but if it hasnt then theres some funds.

As for Sami hes been a great player for us but i think even his greatest supporter will acknowledge he has maybe only 1 or 2 years left at this level. His lack of pace has been exposed this season (even though his overall performances have been good) and with the progression of Agger and we also have Paletta there hes not as indispensable as he was 2 or 3 years ago. Dont forget hes on decent money so if we did bring in Neil im not sure why we'd keep Sami around on those wages, Neil can provide the experienced cover at centre back as well as cover at right back and left back.

I think you'd also find there'd be a number of clubs prepared to pay 4-5 million on Pennant those middle level PL clubs.

neill is 30 as well. not exactly a spring chicken.

Hyppia is a model of professionalism and if he is happy to stay for another season as cover, I would be happy.

Him and Carra would be great mentors to Agger, Paletta, Hobbs etc.

Cisse money probably spent. Neill best used as a LEFT BACK, IMO. Aerially, in particular, young Agger still has a lot to learn, until he has, Sami is still doing the business. Can't agree on Pennant. He is not worthy. Yes weaker clubs will want him, expect offers around the £2M mark :-(

Fair enough but i think we're at the stage with Agger that the only way he'll improve those areas of his game are by playing which means Sami will be mostly used as a squad option for certain games.

Neil may be 30 but he has 4 or 5 years of playing ahead of him that Sami doesnt and as a squad option he covers the entire back 4 wheras sami only covers CB.

It'd be hard to let him go but if we wait another year his value to other teams could be zero, we want Neil, Blackburn want 2 million for him if we wait another year Sami wont get us 2 million.

£10m for for Wright-Phillips?

That was a fair price when he was a player, two years ago. Far more sense to persevere with what we have and get him into form, and keep the powder dry for Alves who can play all down the right, than to try and rescue SWP's career and confidence.

We'll definitely be bringing in a few youngsters, I'd say it probably depends on what the story with investment is whether we'll be bringing in any senior players. The injuries are probably an important factor too.

I'd say a 2nd RB is a priority.

If Alves is still a possible id certainly wait and get him maybe next season, but SWP i think could be great for us, its a pity we were almost forced to sign Pennant because of the lack of wide right players but for 3 million more i know which player id prefer.

There were reports on skysports.com i think last week about us being linked to 2 Real Madrid youngsters, im not sure if that was posted here, they said we faced competition from Chelsea for them, but with Rafa here we may have an edge.

Obviously if we get the investment we need then the money issue isnt as important as it is now.

Bueno and Mata yeah, we've had a load of players on trial too, and we've been linked with Billy Clarke.

We've also been linked with a lot of keepers recently, I'd say that's probably more for next summer when Dudek leaves and Carson could be off too. You never know though, Dudek could go in January.

We can't sell Pennant in January, and nor should we.

Blackburn want £2m for a player who is free in 5 months. Forget it, if we were going to pay that, we'd have done it in the summer. Sami will get us £2m in 6 months, though TBF, I'd expect him to be given a free in order to enable him to get a club that will pay his wages. It seems to be what we do with loyal servants.

No chance SWP is worth £10m, nor that we would get him for that. He won't be allowed to go to a meaningful rival, Damian Duff all over again. Hopefully these greedy players who the chavs sign in order to stop other teams getting them will soon realise that joining the rent boys means the effective end of your top flight career.

I don't expect us to have to sign lots of players this summer, so we should be able to afford a decent RW like Alves

The suggestion SWP would be a perfect fit for us I feel is madness. Never rated him too highly before he moved as he was only beginning to find himself as a player. Nothing that's happened in the interim suggests he'd flourish at Liverpool. I do like Alves and if there's even the remotest chance he'd come, I'd love to see us make a play for him.

Saw Alves on Sky last night, ripping up the right wing and whipping in crosses.

I reckon Rafa had the right idea in the summer. I hope he arrives, however late.

He's outstanding almost everytime I see him. Dives too much for my liking though, but I guess that can be kicked out of him in training.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Shaun Wright Phillips is nowhere near good enough for us. He runs up blind alleys, can't cross, has no awareness of the game going on around him and basically has no end product. He'd be a waste of £10M. West Ham is about the right level for a player with so many obvious flaws

Chelsea wouldn't sell him to us.

Thank God - he's just no good.

Bit like Gonzalez last season?

Swap Hyypia for Neil and sell Pennant for £5m?

Sell a player, who is only starting to get into his stride with the club at a £2m loss?

It's in threads like these I sometimes wish we could just sell off some of our "fans" ...
