Does our utter failure every time we go for a short corner get on anyone else's t***? They should only do these when killing time at the end of the match trying to preserve a win. When it's for competitive purposes they couldn't be any worse. Not that we've had much luck with pumping it into the box mind you but it sometimes embarassing to see the lack of quality of our short corners when you compare it to the talent attempting to pull it off.

they're a total and utter waste of time, and hugely frustrating. a corner is an opportunity to a) get a free, unblocked cross into the penalty area mixer or b) a chance to do something training ground which results in a chance on goal.

for christ's sake, either hang it up there around the peno spot, away from the 'keeper and past the first defender, and have crouch / sami / agger attack it on the run or go back to the gary mac method of skimming it into the front post and flicking it on. at the moment we hit the front post that often i don't know why we don't just station crouchy there to flick it on anyway.

Why the f*** did we abandon the "Gary Mac" corner? Slow floated ball into the fromt post where Hyypia/Babbel would get a flick on and cause mayhem in the box. Crouch is ideal for that role.

West Ham have scored a couple from this sort of corner in recent weeks. If the delivery is decent they're very hard to defend against.

Ste J said weeks ago that they get this stat pack from the PFA and there are virtually no goals scored from corners these days

Rafa mentioned it a couple of weeks back. He doesn't think that the tossed ball into the box results in a decent enough return because defenders are too well drilled nowadays. By playing it short and shifting the angle of the cross, it gives the attacking team more chance to move the defenders around as it pulls the defenders out of their box a bit.

As one who has been supporting the Reds since 1965, I would point out that crap corners are part of the Anfield heritage. I wonder whether we have ever practiced corners in training, or whether the club thinks that it is above that kind of thing.

When Bolton are awarded a corner, their fans get excited. When we get a corner, the crowd start drifting off to the tea bars to get a suasage roll before the action starts again. It has always been like that.

The worst short corners of all were those that Steve McManaman and Jason McAteer used to take in the 1990's. These rarely led to goals for Liverpool, but they created a few goals for the opposition, who used to disposess MacManaman and McAteer, sprint down to the other end and score while our defenders were all stranded upfield.

Gary McAllister's floated corners weren't bad, but they were usually too easy for goalkeepers to deal with. The best corners IMO are those that tempt the keeper out of his goal but swerve away from him.

it doesn't work and is too easy to close down quickly.

Chelsea get at least 5 a season from corners.

and they don't do anything revolutionary. toss it in there at pace towards terry and carvalho.

Good delivery and aggressive movement towards the ball is all you need. Micah Richards is probably the best I've ever seen at attacking the ball from set-pieces. That guy is going to be some player. He was good again yesterday.

Short corner didn't do us any harm against St Etiente in '77. ;)

LOL we have been known to score from corners on occasion! :D

Alan Kennedy mentioned this in his book as well :D Said something to the effect that they might as well had put it out for the opposition to take a quick goalkick.

Man is he f***ing big! None of our player could handle his physical strengh as he just shouldered them away, no problem.

Would love to see him in a Liverpool shirt just like everyone else I reckon.

Yeah, the strange thing about him is he's only 5' 11, he's one of those players who just has a great natural leap though. He's fantastic in the air.

It's early days, but he's honestly one of the best young players I've ever seen. He has the potential to be world class IMO.

If only we'd have signed Figo. Our set piece delivery is a joke and in tight games (like Boro last week and yesterday) they can make the difference. The chavs score half their goals from set pieces.

getting another man out to take a short corner forces the oppositon to defend with two players by the corner flag thus making the penalty area less crowded when there actually is a cross....

But we have fewer people in there too!

That seems to be the problem though, we cannot seem to get a quality cross in after we play it short. I couldn't beliveve my eyes yesterday when they ended up playing the ball all the way back to Reina. Surely the only time your GK should touch the ball after a corner is when he is defending one.
