PSV defender Jan Kromkamp has praised the performance of his former Liverpool team-mates on Tuesday night and admitted that a point was the 'absolute maximum' his new club deserved in the opening game of the Champions League group stage.

Having moved to PSV on transfer deadline day, the Dutch international knew all about what to expect from this Liverpool side and considered the 0-0 draw a great result.

"We just could not break them down," revealed Kromkamp. "Liverpool played a very clever game. They seemed happy for us to have most of the possession but always had players closing down the space and making it difficult for us.

"It was the Liverpool of old in Europe. They defended really well. Once Kone's shot clipped the bar, it became increasingly apparent we didn't have the power or guile to open Liverpool up.

"We only had two decent chances in the 90 minutes, and it's a fact that they created more as the game went on. That was partly my fault. I was so eager to do well against my old club, I kept getting forward at every opportunity.

"Far more than I would normally do, and it left gaps at the back that Liverpool nearly exploited. It was a ploy aimed at trying to find a way through Liverpool's defence, but it went wrong and could so easily have cost us. Overall, though, we cannot be too disappointed as one of our main objectives was to avoid defeat. A draw keeps the group wide open."

Very refreshing analysis of a game and of a performance were he openly admits that he could have cost his team the game by playing for himself and not the team and that the team is not good enough to beat Liverpool

He had a weird time with us, at the start if his tenure he looked like he could have become a decent player for us, a cult hero in the sense that he was a player that gave his all but wasn't good enough, but his performances early in this season wrecked any chance of a Meijer-like heritage he might have hoped for.

Maybe - I dunno - he wasn't really here long enough or played from the start often enough to be sure he couldn't have become something more. Then again, Rafa seems to have moved his own game up a notch in terms of team expectations so there you go...always came over as a decent lad though...a refreshing change from the Rio Ferdinand's and Ashley Cole's of this world.

I liked him - never looked the sort to change a game but always looked reliable and solid, and if he had any complaints about being unhappy at Anfield he never went public with them which to me is a big point in his favour.

I thought he was a perfect back-up for Steve Finnan. He's reliable, solid, and showed a willingness to get forward when he could. A few more games would have seen him right, and given Finnan's eroding form, and the lack of decent back-up, the loss of Kromkamp could come back to haunt us.
