Angry Rafa demands FIFA compensation

Jun 9 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA Benitez today vigorously supported the G14's demand for FIFAtocompensate clubs who lose millions when their players are injured playing for their country.

Liverpool have lost a potential £8m due to the injury to Djibril Cisse, with the knock-on effect seriously impacting on Benitez's transfer plans this summer.

Benitez maintains the current system is flawed, and the vast wealth accumulated by FIFA should be used to repay clubs who lose their most valuable assets on international duty.

"When I spoke at the UEFA coaches meeting last season, this was one of the important issues I raised," said Benitez today.

"In this situation, we have a player who has cost Liverpool a lot of money injured preparing for a World Cup. Now we have to face the cost. There are wages to pay and also we can't sell the player.

"It's clear there is a problem with the rules. As a club, not only have we lost a player we have lost big money.

"I believe FIFA or the national associations should pay the clubs in these situations.

"FIFA is a very wealthy organ-isation and they makealot of money from the World Cup. They should insure the value of the players they want to participate.

"If they're not prepared to pay for this, okay, maybe the clubs should say the players can't play.

"If a team loses one of its most important players, it can make a big difference to their season and determine if they compete forthe title or fight against relegation.

"I know there are some associations whoare less wealthy, particularly among the African nations, but in those situations FIFA should help because they make a lot of money, particularly during a World Cup.

"I know Liverpool has suffered a lot because of the rules. This time it's Cisse, but last year we had a problem with Milan Baros when he was injured playing for the Czechs."

Two high-profile court cases could force FIFAto change their rules.

The most advanced involves Charleroi player Abdelmadjid Oulmers, who was unable to play forhis club after injuring himself representing Morocco.

Backed by the G14, his club took legal action and last Maythe case against FIFA was referred to the European Court of Justice.

Should FIFA lose, rules obliging clubs to release players for international duty, preventing clubs from demanding any form of financial reward in return for release and demanding clubs be bound by FIFA's international calendar face extinction.

Federations would also be forced to provide insurance cover.

Under current rules, the FA will insure English players from the Premiership against injury on international duty, but that doesn't apply to overseas players or associations.

Liverpool won't receive a penny in wages or insurance for the duration of Cisse's rehabilitation.

Cisse's bad luck has, at least, prolonged a Liverpool career which was on the verge of ending two years after his £14m transfer.

"He has had unbelievable bad luck," reflected Benitez.

"To suffer the same injury twice is really unlucky for him, buthe made a fantastic recovery last time and I'm sure he can do the same again."

Club doctor Mark Waller also revealed the latest injury isn't as bad as that suffered in Blackburn 18 months ago.

"The latest news we've had is extremely positive. He's had the operation done and everything has gone in a very straightforward fashion," said Waller.

It amazes me still that there is nothing in place already. It's obvious that any player that is good enough will want to represent their country so why should the club's that they are contracted to assume all the risk. FIFA are as corrupt as the UN...........I really hope something is done about this and soon.

thats just unbelievable .

I asked this yesterday and I think that we won't get anything from France, FIFA or the FA, but we will get something from our own insurance. Can someone confirm?

So does Liverpool's insurance only cover them for when they play for Liverpool - if so madness

Rafa is right, FIFA must pay up. Cisse is our property and we loaned him to one of FIFA's delegates, and while in their charge they f*cked him up. Therefore they have to compensate us.

The law will back us on this one, we should act as witnesses in the G14 case against FIFA.

Well, if we were to receive any sort of compensation, I surely do hope that it would be more than that short Brazilian.

Mind, he's old and all!

Yes - we are covered by our own quite costly insurance - the only way currently to off-set disasters like this.

Had a insurance guy on SSN last night in reference to rooney getting injuried again while on international duty. He was saying that at the moment clubs pay players all year including while on international duty (although bonuses are paid by nations if they achieve certain things) and also no insurance is taken by the nations. It's up to clubs to cover their players. Although he did add that some nations volunteer something towards wages if a player is injuried with them and defintely some will pay out if it is a career threatening injury.

Guess this is the crutch of G14's argument that clubs have to release players for international duty but have no come back when things go wrong for player on international duty.

That's about the size of it - and credit were it's due, as far as I'm aware the only national FA's that have as near an equitable agreement with the clubs as you're likely to get without a legal resolution are our own FA, the DFB (Deutscher Fussball Bund), Svenskfotboll (SE) Swedish, and the KNVB (Dutch). Other European FA's and the 'J' League have some sort of agreement but not in an adequate enough way to please the clubs.

As far as I'm concerned, players also shouldn't receive money from the clubs whilst on international duty. If should be the responsibility of the national associations as to how much and indeed whether they receive any money at all.

So...G14 aren't just a malignant stain on the face of football after all

Rafa is right, Cisse deal was almost on, until he broke his ankle in International duty, I do understand Benitez, his anger about this all, we are talking about a lot of money here.

International duty is something that works for you and against you. Success on the international stage boosts a player's value, his development and self esteem - we've just experienced the downside thats all. What i suspect irritates most people is the fact that we don't have 8m of a transfer kitty to replace a striker whose not flavour of the month

We will have Cisse for awhile yet, maybe when he returns to the first team squad and with the new players coming in this summer (a natural winger on the right for example) we will see a very different player maybe even one with a value closer to the 14m price tag we got him for. Now this has happened I think he deserves that chance.

Tell that to the Ivory Coast if Drogba breaks his leg.

It would end up like the rugby union world cup where the poor countries cant afford to take their star players.

Yes we have been fecked up with this but i think we have to just take the s*** hand we have been dealt

I'm far more expectant of bobwright's explanation on the latest leg break than FIFA coughing up the money

International duty never works for big clubs, only for small ones.
