Samuel Eto'o, who scored the equaliser on 76 minutes before Juliano Belletti's winner, said Barcelona had been inspired by Liverpool's recovery from 3-0 down in last season's Champions League final against AC Milan.

"We never thought the game was lost," said the Cameroon striker.

It's special to win the final, and even more special to do it against your old team

Barcelona's Giovanni van Bronckhorst

"After having seen what Liverpool did last year we told ourselves not to throw in the towel. We followed Liverpool's example.

"In the final you can't doubt yourselves.

"The final's played right up to the last whistle. We covered ourselves in the spirit of Liverpool." :D:D sign that man immediatly.

a few weeks ago i said i'd rather have Eto'o before Shevchenko.. for me he's probably the best striker in the World, i think he's fantastic and his contribution to the game last night was superb.. by that analysis, the fact he's sending this 'come and get me' plea to the greatest club in the World is no surprise.. :D

Before the World Cup.

We were offered him 4 years ago for 6 million Euros, but Houllier didn't think he was worth it.

As I recall, neither did a lot of posters here at the time...'egomaniac', 'showpony' - and many other labels were thrown at Et'o back then.

Obviously there wasn't enough commission involved for Houllier if we'd have signed him. ;)

I was one of a tiny minority who wanted us to sign Eto'o when Houllier was interested. Most people on here and other sites seemed to think he would fail in England. Sometimes you're right sometimes you're wrong, but in hindsight I don't think there's much doubt he would have succeeded massively here.

I think he's as good as any out and out striker in the world; his style isn't as easy on the eye as Henry or Shevchenko - there's something less graceful in the way he moves than them - but he's just as effective and just as good in his own way.

Eto'o is pure power and pace, but has a fantastic touch as well and great composure in front of goal. Not only that, but he's a team player as well; he moves out wide all the time to cause problems for the opposition by dragging centre-halves out of position, for the likes of Ronaldinho, Messi and Giuly to make runs from deep into the space they leave.

He plays with his heart as well - I think he's brilliant to watch. Madrid must have been insane sending him out on loan then letting him go...

Liverpool's comeback feat inspired us, says Eto'o

Dominic Fifield at the Stade de France

The Guardian

Samuel Eto'o insisted Barcelona's breathless late comeback last night was inspired by the memory of Liverpool's exploits in Istanbul a year previously, with the Cameroonian striker heralding this the "most beautiful moment" of his career.

Eto'o's equaliser, slipped beyond Manuel Almunia at his near post following Henrik Larsson's flick, deflated the Premiership side to pave the way for Juliano Belletti's winner just five frantic minutes later. Yet it was the Merseysiders' startling recovery from 3-0 down at half-time last season which ensured Barça's players, frustrated through the first period, never despaired of recovery.

"Whatever we did in the first half didn't work, but we fought, dominated the second half and never gave up," said Eto'o, his son Etienne on his knee and Uefa's player of the match award clasped in his hand. "Having seen what Liverpool did last year when they were 3-0 down and apparently well beaten, we knew that you can't just accept you've lost until the final whistle goes. If you look at Liverpool's spirit, you know you have to fight to the end and, God permitting, you can win.

"You can't allow doubts to creep in in a final like this. When we came out after half-time, we heard our supporters and remembered the spirit of Liverpool's players a year ago. We kept trying and trying and, in the end, God wanted us to win. There aren't enough words to explain what we're experiencing. What we have done today will only sink in when we stop playing football. This is probably the most beautiful moment in my entire career."

tbf, he didn't look like the world class striker he is now four years ago. Always looked talented, but not one of those you had pinned down to become one of the very best. He's come on leaps and bounds since then.

Immediately after the publication of the photo with him bearing a big smile holding our shirt up

So what are you waiting for, and make sure your camera batteries are charged.

There was an article a while ago in which he said that the summer he signed for Barca we were offering him and Mallorca more money but he said he couldnt stand the english weather!

The sun's cracking the pavements today in Liverpool!

4 years ago he was pretty similar to what Defoe is now, ie: probably not as good as his talent suggests he should be. He was a good player at Mallorca, he's been superb at Barca.
