Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but it does involve a liverpool player

I think Mcclaren will be tempted to pick a new captain. beckham will be too old for the next workd cup and given his closeness to sven i would imagine mcclaren would want a new captain to help him make his own mark on the team.

neville will be too old next time, so the main characters who also captain their teams are terry and gerrard.

for me it has to be stevie. i hate terry but can appreciate his qualities although i think he doenst have quite enough pace to be the best in the world in his position. however his battling qualities are there to be seen and make up for his lack of pace to some degree and his goals are valuable.

for me though it has to be stevie. he is pretty much guaranteed a place in the team, he will be at his peak at the next world cup and with his performances in the CL and FA cup final he has shown he is an inspirational leader who can change a game on his own and drag a team with him when it is needed.

obviously we are a biased forum but thoughts?

there was a time when Rio was being touted as the obvious future cpatain for england.

that was of course before he was outed as a brainless druggie,

I reckon they will give to Terry, he is more likely to finnish a game than Gerrard, who runs himself in to the ground everytime he plays. I would of course like it to be Gerrard but I reckon they will give it to Terry.

Gerrard has the stamina to last 90 minutes. Not exactly a regular substitute is he?

He is the obvious candidate for me. First of all, he is a midfielder and more involved in the game than Terry is. Secondly, he is just a leader, the way he plays, drives a team forwards. If there ever was a player made for captaincy, it is gerrard.

Selfishly, I hope he doesn't get it, he is our captain and ours alone, I'm Irish, so don't give a feck who the England Captain is as long as it isn't Stevie or Carra, they should be Liverpools Heros and to prevent the 'England Captain Gerrard bailed out Liverpool again...' nonsense from the media.

I know it would be a great honor for him but I want him to concentrate on us and us alone.

Well yeah granted, but, Gerrard would be the one player you would want to rest late in a game, in a tournament with another game just three days away, else by the semis/final he would be knackered.

I would like it to be Gerrard and think he would do a boss job, but then again, if it was him, he would be expected to play/represent England for everything and we normally lose players to injury while on England duty, and England quite often choses someone from the back like CB, even goalie.

Ignoring the fact that Beckham will be captain until he retires because no one in the FA have the balls to tell him otherwise the next England Captain will almost certainly be from Chelsea.

and quite often they don't. For almost the last 10 years it has been attacking players

Not questioning you, but out of interest and laziness, who has it been?. I remember Shilton, Butcher(?) Hughes, Brian Robson, Shearer(?) Beckham. was Lineaker a captain?.

Shearer, Owen, Heskey and Beckham have all been England captain in the last 10 years.

Is the surprise for me in that group, I liked Emile alot, but that still came as a surprise.

John Terry. McClaren is a huge fan of his apparently. Understandably so.

not the news i was hoping you were going to bring us, Elisha. bugger.

From a selfish standpoint I hope Stevie doesn't get it. I would love his attention focused on Liverpool FC. IMO the Captaincy did nothing for Beckham's game and if anything became a big distraction. Let John Terry be the one to be distracted.

John Terry, or should i say "sir John Terry"

The media have decided he is going to be the captain and are doing there damndest to create Sir john terry as they did with beckham.

Dong get me wrong, terry is a fantastic world class player, but he gets away with far too much, both on and off the pitch.

Looking at it another way, it's not just who's the best captain for the team but who would improve most by being made captain. When Sven made Beckham captain, he got his head sorted out (a bit). I think Gerrard's really grown into the role, too.

Now Henry is Arsenal captain, he doesn't let himself disappear like he used to, now he has to set an example. I think making Gerrard captain would have a more positive effect on the player than making Terry captain would. He's that kind of bloke anyway, like Carra.
