Carroll was hugely overpriced but has at least contributed, however infrequently. He's also been mismanaged, in my view. Downing has been "first choice" almost since the moment of his arrival and repaid us with no goals, no assists and no f***ing conviction for a whole season. I'd class him as a worse signing than Carroll, because at least with the latter we can con ourselves by referring to his age and saying "he can improve". Downing's about 28 and is good as he's going to get. What a sobering thought that is. I'm aware I sound a bit angry here, but Stewart Downing is pocketing tens of thousands of pounds a week to run around a bit and contribute absolutely f*** all for the team.
