Today's Liverpool-related transfer rumours........ Jermaine Pennant The Daily Mail, the Liverpool Daily Post, the Mirror & the Times all report that Liverpool will offer Pennant a one-year extension to his contract so that they can get a fee for him when he leaves. However, the Mirror & the Times says it’s “unlikely” he will sign. The Mirror says that Wigan “would be interested in taking Pennant on loan”, which “would appeal to Liverpool in their attempt to sign Emile Heskey from the Latics”. Emile Heskey According to the Mirror, Heskey “wants to go back to Liverpool” & “has told close friends he is keen to go back to the Kop & be part of their trophy-chasing squad”. Despite interest from Aston Villa & Spurs, Heskey “has his heart set on a return to Anfield” & “he regretted leaving [Liverpool] just before Rafa Benitez arrived”. The paper says “insiders claim Heskey will definitely join Liverpool in the summer for nothing”, which gives Liverpool “the chance to broker a cut-price deal now”, possibly “for as low as £1.5m” although Wigan value him “in the region of £4m”. In another article the Mirror says Heskey is “top of his [Rafa’s] list” of targets for the transfer window. The Daily Mail says that Spurs are “understood to be interested in Heskey”, who is also wanted by Aston Villa & Liverpool, although Wigan are “determined” to keep him. Glen Johnson According to the Daily Mail, Johnson is “expected” to sign a new contract with Portsmouth today “after a proposed move to Liverpool fell through”. The paper reports that Johnson “was interested” in moving to Liverpool, but they “could not afford” Portsmouth’s asking price of around £10m. Portsmouth’s chairman Peter Storrie has said “Let's make it clear, there will be no more players sold”. The Times also reports that Liverpool are “struggling” to raise the money to buy Johnson, who “may” sign an improved deal with Portsmouth. Michael Turner The Daily Mail reports that Hull have opened new contract talks with defender Michael Turner “to stop him joining Liverpool or Manchester City”, both of whom are “keen on landing [him]”.

Today's Liverpool-related transfer rumours........ Rafa on the possibility of new signings The Guardian says “Benitez's view [is] that Liverpool will be quiet in this transfer window, with the exception of offloading Jermaine Pennant…& encouraging Daniel Agger to sign a new contract”. Rafa says in the article "It is difficult to buy in January. If you bring in new players then they need time to settle & if you sell players then maybe you will lose something. We don't have any clubs asking for our players. It is important to keep the squad together, although you cannot guarantee that you won't sell anyone or sign anyone." According to the Liverpool Daily Post Rafa “has not entirely ruled out any moves during the transfer window”. Emile Heskey The Daily Mail says Aston Villa are keen on Emile Heskey, although Wigan have made it clear they don't want him to go. According to the article “Heskey has other offers for the summer & may prefer to bide his time but offers of around £5m may force Wigan to relent”. It says that “Liverpool will be watching events closely”. The Times confirms that both Villa & Liverpool “are keen on” Heskey, but that Wigan “believe they can resist their interest” & “firmly expect” him to see out the final 6 months of his contract. Joe Cole According tothe Daily Mail Liverpool, Man City & Spurs would be interested in Joe Cole, who is unhappy about the amount of games he is getting at the moment, but Chelsea would be “loathe to sell” him. The article says both Liverpool & Spurs “would struggle to do business at this point due to a lack of major funds” & that if Cole left he “would prefer to go to a side challenging for European & domestic honours now”. Ryan Babel The Liverpool Daily Post reports that Spurs have been linked with a possible £10m bid for Ryan Babel this month, but Liverpool have “no intention” of selling him.

Today's Liverpool-related transfer rumours........ Rafa on the possibility of new signings The Liverpool Daily Post says Liverpool are “highly unlikely" to make any signings this month & there is “very little prospect” of any of the club’s 1st team stars leaving. Rafa has said “We do not need to go into the transfer market, we are certainly not desperate to do so. If we find we need something we will try, but it is always hard in this window & very expensive. But we are in a good position & I am happy to use the players we have now plus the ones returning from injury.” Emile Heskey The Liverpool Daily Post reports that “sources at the club confirm that Benitez has made no move to re-sign Emile Heskey”. Jermaine Pennant Jermaine Pennant is “likely to be” “the only departure” during the transfer window, according to the Liverpool Daily Post. The paper says that “if a deal [for Pennant] cannot be secured, Benitez will send the winger out on loan”. Daniel Agger The Liverpool Daily Post says Rafa “will rebuff any attempts by AC Milan to sign defender Daniel Agger”. Andrea Dossena The Liverpool Daily Post reports that Andreas Dossena “would have been a possible departure” during this transfer window, but is now needed as Insua is away at the U-20 South American Championship for the next month. Andriy Voronin According to the Daily Mail Voronin has “become unsettled at Hertha Berlin & is a target for their rivals Schalke”. Sami Hyypia The BBC Gossip Column reports that the Daily Star says Sami is a target for Blackburn, Fulham, Spurs, Stoke & Sunderland. Marvin Pourie The LFC website has confirmed that 17 year old striker Marvin Pourie, signed in 2007 for £50,000, is set to join Schalke. Yesterday’s Liverpool Echo says the transfer fee is £150,000 while this morning’s Daily Post says it is only £50,000. James McCarthy Hamilton Academical midfielder James McCarthy, who according to previous reports continues to interest Liverpool, says in the Times that his development as a result of playing regular 1st team football shows he was right to turn down the chance of joining Liverpool in 2007.

Perfect package Spanish presence helped striker settle at Reds Last updated: 6th January 2009 Fernando Torres plans to prove he is the complete player by firing Liverpool to title glory this season. The forward says his game has improved considerably under Reds boss Rafael Benitez and after winning Euro 2008 with Spain last summer he now has the Premier League and Champions League crowns in his sights. Torres, who scored against Preston on Sunday after six weeks out with a hamstring injury, has netted 29 times in the league since making a smooth transition from Atletico Madrid to Anfield in August 2007. And in an exclusive interview with Revista De La Liga, the 28-year-old said he has every hope of kicking on at Liverpool because the Premier League's pace and power suits his own game. "In the career of every footballer there come a time when you mature as a player," Torres reflected. "You start to feel a settled confidence in your ability and look to work on fine tuning the things you feel you can improve. "I am referring to things like having a greater understanding of the importance of your position on the field; it is about becoming a more complete footballer. In my case I have also been lucky enough to find not only league that plays my kind of football but also a team that plays the way I like. "I am lucky enough to play alongside players like Steven Gerrard who for me is the complete player, when you have a player like that who you know is looking to play the ball to you and create space for you in your side it gives you even more confidence in yourself." Transition Torres, who made an instant impression with Liverpool supporters by scoring his first goal for the club against Chelsea in September 2007, said he was able to adapt quickly to the English game because he instantly felt at home at Anfield. "I arrived at an English club but it is a club that has a significant Spanish presence in the changing room. There are Spanish players at the club and some of the coaching staff are Spanish, some Argentinean," he said. "There are people that have played in Spain and that speak the language. That influence certainly made the transition easier for me as I was able to talk to my team-mates about everything and ask them advice as well as get to know them better. They have also helped me get to grips with the language. "Pepe Reina is my neighbour and has helped me more than anyone because he lives so close. But I think that things really got started for me in the game against Chelsea. When you score in the first game you immediately start to feel comfortable and things get easier." Torres attracted Liverpool's attention by scoring 91 times in 243 games for Atletico but was twice unable to line up against his former club in the Champions League due to injury. Barca best "When I left Atletico one of the things that I wanted to happen was that one day I would face my old team in the Champions League, go to the Calderon and acknowledge those fans again and receive them here in England," he said. "In the end all of those things happened except that I was not able to play which was a great shame. I would have liked to have played in Madrid and at Anfield and to have experienced the game from the inside." The two sides could meet again in the latter stages of the competition if Liverpool can see off Real Madrid and although Torres feels Barcelona remain the strongest side in Europe he still expects the Reds to challenge for European success. "On the face of things Real Madrid are a huge team," he admitted. "They are always in contention in European competition and there is no reason why this year should be any different. But over the last few years we have proven to be a tough ask for any rival. "The thing about this Barcelona is that they do not settle for what they have they are always looking for more. The variety of quality players that they have in their squad is fantastic and means that the impact of injuries is limited." He added: "We have a real change of winning things this season. A Benitez team is never just about one player but about the group. We have a solid unit that knows how to win games playing our way. "Everyone is important here; we are working towards the same goal of ensuring that Liverpool win the Premier League. If we are able to achieve this it will have been a joint effort no one player will take the most credit. It is a group effort." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11669_4756185,00.html

Gillett Embarassed at Our Financial Situation
GWistooshort replied to Flight 's topic in Liverpool FC
Tony Barrett on Hicks & Gillett's refinancing from today's Echo........... Extended deal for Liverpool FC owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jan 6 2009 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo TOM HICKS and George Gillett are understood to have exercised their option to delay repayment of the £350m debt they have built up since buying Liverpool. Under the terms of their loan agreement with the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Reds American owners could opt between refinancing the debt, paying back the loan this January or extending it for a further six months. The ECHO understands the automatic repayment delay option was always likely to be triggered and Hicks and Gillett did so as soon as the opportunity became available under the terms of their contract with the RBS on January 1. The development means the loan will now not mature until July 24, at which point no further extensions are likely to be available. Neither Hicks nor Gillett were available for comment with the duo having adopted a much lower profile in recent months at a time when Liverpool’s fortunes on the pitch have flourished. http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-f...00252-22616445/ -

Rafa Benitez wants Wigan's Emile Heskey back at Liverpool
GWistooshort replied to Stevie H 's topic in Liverpool FC
From today's Independent.............. Benitez cool on Heskey deal as Reds looks to sell By Ian Herbert Tuesday, 6 January 2009 Rafael Benitez has not indicated within Anfield that he is seeking to sign Emile Heskey to provide the attacking options which Liverpool have lacked this season. The Wigan player is out of contract in the summer, leading to suggestions that a return to the club where he scored 39 times in 150 games between 2000 and 2004 may be on the cards. Benitez, who was unwilling last month to discuss reports linking the England international with Liverpool, does not appear to be coveting his signature. The other possible outcome for Heskey would be a move to Aston Villa, though there are some suggestions within the game that the kind of salary he would be expecting to command might make any such move a prohibitive one. Bruce believes Heskey must stay at Wigan Athletic if he is to prolong his international career and stand any chance of representing England at the World Cup in 2010. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/footbal...ll-1228184.html -
Actually enough Liverpool-related transfer rumours today to do a round up........ Jermaine Pennant A number of papers are reporting that Jermaine Pennant has been offered a pre-contract agreement by AC Milan to sign on a free transfer in the summer. According to the Liverpool Daily Post, Liverpool are keen to off-load Pennant, who is also a target for Blackburn, Spurs & Wigan, for a fee this month. The Daily Mail says that Pennant’s proposed move to Real Madrid “could yet be revived” or Liverpool “may try to loan him to another Barclays Premier League club until the end of the season in order to receive a fee”, with Hull, Stoke & Wigan “thought to be keen”. The Independent reports that Wigan haven’t yet made any offer for Pennant. According to the Times Milan are “confident” they will get Pennant, “even though the winger is still pondering the offer”. The Times says Rafa has “lost patience” with Pennant’s “lifestyle & timekeeping”. Sky Sports reports that Italian paper the Corriere Dello Sport claim Milan could announce a deal for Pennant this week. Daniel Agger The Guardian, the Liverpool Daily Post & the Times all report that Liverpool will reject any attempt by AC Milan to sign Daniel Agger during the January transfer window, with the Guardian saying that Liverpool “insist” that Agger “is not for sale”. According to the Times, Rafa “is determined to hold on to Agger” & Liverpool “have informed the Denmark defender & his agent, Per Steffensen, they will resist any approach”. The article also says that Liverpool have denied recent reports in the Italian media that Agger would be available for £7m in the summer under a release clause in his contract or that Agger has been offered & rejected a new £75,000-a-week deal. Andrea Dossena The Guardian & the Liverpool Daily Post report that Liverpool are not looking to sell Andrea Dossena during the transfer window, with Rafa saying “I am not considering selling Dossena. I think it is important to keep the squad together.” Glen Johnson The Daily Mail & the Independent say Portsmouth are “hoping” to agree a new 4-year deal with Glen Johnson, who “looks set to stay”, although “Liverpool are believed to be monitoring his situation”. Negotiations between Pompey & Johnson “are at an advanced stage” according to the BBC. Sky Sports report Pompey boss Tony Adams is “confident” Johnson will sign a new contract, saying “the deal is 90% completed". Emile Heskey The Independent reports that Rafa has not given any indication within Anfield that he is seeking to sign Emile Heskey & “does not appear to be coveting his signature”. According to the Mirror, Aston Villa are planning a £4m bid for Heskey. Antonio Valencia The BBC Gossip Column says that various media outlets says that Wigan’s £15m-rated Antonio Valencia, whom manager Steve Bruce has said will not be sold during the transfer window, is a target for Liverpool, as well as Real Madrid & Spurs.

Rafa Benitez wants Wigan's Emile Heskey back at Liverpool
GWistooshort replied to Stevie H 's topic in Liverpool FC
Latest quotes on Heskey from Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan......... "Everybody knows Emile Heskey's future hangs in the balance right now ahead of the transfer window opening on Thursday. Emile is out of contract at the end of the season, but there have been no approaches for him. If Emile eventually moves on, we naturally have to find a quality replacement. We totally respect Emile and it all depends on what he wants to do. I honestly feel this could be his last career move, but obviously we would love to see him stay at Wigan." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11669_4720556,00.html -
Gillett Embarassed at Our Financial Situation
GWistooshort replied to Flight 's topic in Liverpool FC
From the rumour mill in today's Liverpool Daily Post.......... The Dubai Royal Family have ended their interest in a £500million offer to buy Liverpool, leaving the controversial American owners in charge until at least next July, claims the Mail on Sunday The high asking price and financial downturn in Dubai have persuaded the family of Sheikh Al-Maktoum to pull the plug on the deal that Amanda Staveley, who brokered the Abu Dhabi takeover at Manchester City, has been mediating. The lack of any realistic buyer means the Royal Bank of Scotland and American bank Wachovia are even less likely to force owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to sell the club on or before January 25, when their £350m refinancing deal runs out, and will therefore agree to the July extension allowed for in the original deal. The Dubai royals had tried to buy Liverpool before the American pair in December 2006. They renewed their interest a year later when the Americans quoted them a £1billion price tag. The Al-Maktoums indicated they would pay around £500m, but the reluctance of the Americans to sell to them, combined with the economic climate, has dashed their enthusiasm. RUMOUR RATING: Two stars Plenty of posturing involved in this kind of story as both sides try to gain the upper hand in a multi-million pound game of brinksmanship. http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverp...375-22436513/3/ -
& he says no The Mirror Manchester City offer Fernando Torres £200,000 a week By David Maddock 9/10/2008 Manchester City have given notice of their incredible financial muscle with a mind-blowing £200,000 a week offer to Fernando Torres. The Mirror can reveal that representatives of the Premiership club’s Abu Dhabi owners have made discreet contact with the Liverpool striker’s advisors within the last fortnight. And while there has been no official approach or a formal offer, it is understood the Spaniard’s agents have had the prospect of an incredible deal spelt out to them in no uncertain terms. Sources in Spain, where the player’s advisors - the management group Bay International - are based, suggest that the oil rich owners of City would happily more than DOUBLE the striker’s salary to get their man. And while Torres has made it clear that he would not be interested in any offer at any price, it is still a sobering reflection of just how powerful City could become in the market. The figure has virtually been plucked out of the air to illustrate to the player’s advisor how keen the Arabs would be to see a player of Torres’ standing arrive at the City of Manchester Stadium. Ironically, the Spaniard scored twice there to win the game for City on Sunday, and emphasise his status as probably the best striker in Europe at the moment. City manager Mark Hughes wants another striker, and while he is pragmatic enough to realise that he will find it difficult to tempt a player such as Torres away from a big four club, he accepts the club’s new owners need to show they mean business. Torres has discreetly sent word back that he is happy at Liverpool, and wouldn’t consider the move, not matter how much money he is offered. He still has FIVE years left on his current Anfield contract and has given his word to the Kop fans he adores that he will not leave. In fact, the only way he would consider a departure from Liverpool is if manager Rafa Benitez is somehow forced out by a failure to renew his own contract. The manager currently has around 18 months to run, and would be keen to sign an extension to provide some long term stability at the club. If that doesn’t happen and the unthinkable becomes reality with Torres departing, then it would only be for Spain, and not another English club. In fact, Torres would leave only to join Barcelona, or return to his previous club Atletico Madrid, where he hopes to eventually finish his career. It is understood that City won’t become arrogant in their pursuit of top players, and will instead allow Hughes to build a squad without the absolute necessity for star names. But Torres is the exception. If there was any way he could be tempted then they would pay the wages no matter what the level. If offers an intriguing insight into the direction of the Premiership over the next few years, with such an astonishing amount of money on offer to the right player. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/liv...15875-20789269/

A great read.............. SAMMY LEE TALKS TO LIVERPOOLFC.TV Jimmy Rice 09 October 2008 Sammy Lee has given his assessment of the season so far and revealed he is taking no notice of the plaudits currently coming Liverpool's way. Here's what our assistant manager had to say when the official website caught up with him at Melwood. How long has it been since you saw a game of football like the City victory, Sammy? It was quite exciting but we've had a few games like that in our recent past. We had the Arsenal game last season, and the Man Utd game this year – that was an exciting finale. The game once again showed the character of the team. We weren't particularly pleased with our first-half performance – it lacked a bit of tempo. But we upped it in the second half and got our just rewards. What message will that comeback send to the rest of the Premier League? I am not really sure. People should know the strength of Liverpool – they know what we're about. We're just concentrating on what we do, rather than worrying what people think about us. One thing I'll say to you again, though, is that it showed the character in the group – that's very important. You've been part of so many Liverpool teams – how does the mentality of this one compare? Well it's still early days. We don't want to get carried away. We're still in the process of trying to improve, trying to get better. All these players want to get better, they all want to listen. That's also very important. It's only October and we can't afford to get carried away. This football club is not about what's happening in October – we're about what's happening in May. We're pleased with where we are but we know we've still got a lot of work and improving to do. Everyone in this football club is working very hard to make sure this improvement is obvious to everybody. Yes, it seems like Rafa has brought together a group of winners, players with a real desire to win trophies? That's always important. There are a lot of good characters in the dressing room, and that hopefully manifests itself on the pitch. How much belief did you have we could turn it round on Sunday? We always have belief at Liverpool. We've had previous, as they say. I don't even have to mention Istanbul. We knew the next goal would be vital and thankfully we got it. That lifted our spirits. We always have faith in our ability here. That's not arrogance – we just know what we're about. The belief we had meant we could do it, and we did do it. It's always tough to pick out individuals after a second half performance like that, but we saw another two goals for Fernando Torres – can he get much better? Dirk Kuyt scored too, and there were a few assists along the way. Like you, I don't want to pick out individuals. We can all get better. That's no criticism of anybody – I'm talking about 'we', meaning everyone here. You mention Dirk Kuyt – was there anyone more deserving of a late goal like that than him after all the work he puts in? There are a lot of people who put a lot of work in. You've got players like Robbie Keane putting it in and you could also say he deserves another goal. Everyone works very hard to get the best for this football club, and like you say I don't like picking out individuals. Having said that, Dirk is an example of what we're about at this football club: hard work and a good level of quality. All but one of our league goals this season have come in the second half – how much is that down to the staff here at Melwood working on fitness? It's a massive part of any football team: your preparation. But we do try to score from the first minute! It does show, though, the fitness levels we have. It also shows the team spirit in the camp. If we go behind for whatever reason we don't let our heads go down. The players get all the credit but it really seems like we have a great backroom team right now? The players should get the credit. This game is all about the players. But in any football club it's important you have a team behind the team. These people help the players go out there and perform to the upmost of their ability. Rafa has certainly assembled a very good backroom staff. Everyone plays a part in this football club: tea ladies; some of the press officers [looks over to press officer with a smile]; everyone. The good thing about Rafa is that he has an appreciation of what every single person at the football club does. How frustrating is the timing of this international break, with us being on such a good run? That's the nature of the game and we know when all the fixtures are. Because we have so many quality players here, we have quite a number away. But it gives us an opportunity to look at other things and other facets of the football club that we don't always get to spend time on. Like what? There's fitness work we can do with some people where there might not have been time because of games and travelling. People can do some catching up. Is it part of your task to make sure the players stay focused when they return? It's part of all our jobs. I'm not being glib: everyone at this football club plays a part in what we do. We all stand or fall by what anyone does. It's been our best ever start to the Premier League. How much attention are you paying to the table right now? Well I hope you are saying in May that it's been our best finish as well. At the end of the day, I don't know anything that's ever been won in October. How hard is it to keep everyone's feet on the ground with all the media hype surrounding our title credentials? Well everyone knows what's expected of them. At the moment we have nothing. It's nice to get the plaudits and I hope we're getting them at the end of the season. Only then will it matter. How much have you enjoyed these first few months back? [smiles] Not at all! No, it's been magnificent. It's just great being back and working with such a good team. There's great staff and it's a fantastic environment. Are you even more confident now than you were when you returned that we could be up there come May? I am always confident – this is Liverpool Football Club. I'm always confident we'll be challenging in May because if we're not then there's something wrong. We know the challenge ahead and the potential pitfalls but I'm confident now, as I was when I came back, because we're Liverpool. We have aspirations and expectations and we have to make sure we try to fulfil them. Looking around the rest of the league, who else has impressed you? I don't look at the rest of the Premier League, I look at our next game. I'm just concerned with Liverpool. There's a number of great teams out there but each game presents it's own difficulties. Look at the game against Stoke. We're fully aware of the strengths and weaknesses of every opposition that we have to play. http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N...081009-0809.htm
