I'm no finance whizz - but is that $17m (sorry I don't have an english keyboard) in today's money? I'd assume we could afford to pay higher wages because of increased revenue from other operations of the business, champs league etc, coupled with inflation (over subsequent years) would be able to fund this. Wouldn't you have to discount everything to it's present value to find out the "opportunity cost"?

I'm not here to slag off Carragher as he has been a terrific servant for Liverpool however it's just the chain events towards the end of his career that somehow polarizes all the good that he has done for the club on the pitch. Regardless of the whole Rafa saga and the 90k contract, the definitive moment for me was when he had a dust up with Arbeloa which I believe was totally uncalled for. Perhaps the Carra fanboys would disagree but for a Liverpool player I thought it was poor form and I was glad Arbie stood up to him. Besides 1 euro (possibly 2), world and la liga championship later I guess I know who is having the last laugh. I just don't understand the whole "Carra would be a great manager for Liverpool one day" considering the style of his play. If Brendan Rodgers succeeds then I guess that day may never come.........if he wins a premiership with his hoof the ball style then I'll eat my socks. Anyways back to lurking.

How many careers did he wreck when he was at Valencia? Where are Valencia now? The truth of the matter is that the quality of the squad is lacking, too many bit part players. You could argue that it is Rafas fault with regards to player purchasing, but we just can't compete financially.

Kind of a narrow minded article IMO. Palettas problem is that he over commits himself far too soon in the tackle letting the player flash past him. Once he learns to take his time then he will be much better for us.
