It seemed a fine gesture, though, an acknowledgement of the wider achievement of English football in Europe. It felt consistent that supporters who care so much for history would have a heightened sense of it. Then the letters started arriving. Craig Lindfield netted a hat-trick while Martin Kelly and Mikel San Jose were also on target as Liverpool's reserves thrashed Mexican outfit Tigres 5-1 in their second game in the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup. Gary Ablett's men, who smashed seven goals past FK Slavija, in their opening match of the tournament, have maintained their position at the top of Super Group B and now seem certainties to move into the semi-finals of the competition. Despite the convincing scoreline, Ablett was less than impressed with his side's performance at Richland College field, and believes that playing two games in as many days may have caught up with his youngsters. "We got ourselves into a 2-0 lead in the first half without ever playing well," he said. "To be honest we played poorly throughout the game. They passed the ball better than we did but they never had anyone who was going to really hurt us. "They deserved to get their goal to make it 2-1 at half time and when we got the lads in at the break we told them some home truths. "Nothing really changed though in the second half. We never really got to grips with the game at all. Whether it was the journey catching up with us or whether it was because it was our second game in two days, I don't know. "On the plus side we defended very well and Craig Lindfield can be pleased with scoring a hat-trick. "This is tournament football and so we will take the win even if we would have wanted to play a lot better. We've played two now, won two and scored twelve goals so in that respect it's pleasing."
