  1. Good to see Pepe isnt the only one who can have a good time!
  2. Roy Hodgson is reportedly set to complete his first piece of business as Liverpool manager with the double signing of Paul Scharner and Taye Taiwo. Scharner is available from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer after his contract expired at the end of the season. With a limited budget available if he wants to keep hold of his players, Hodgson will be looking for bargain players who are proven in the Premier League. Valentin Hobel, Scharner’s agent, recently said: “Roy Hodgson and Paul Scharner - this is a special relationship. “Liverpool would be a dream, of course, but we are in contact with several clubs. Because he is a free transfer, he can choose.” The former Fulham boss sees the Austrian as a central midfielder rather than defender, which could see him replacing Lucas Leiva. Lucas is reportedly the subject of an offer from Palermo and could be joined out of the Anfield exit door by fellow holding midfielder Javier Mascherano – with Inter Milan the likely destination for Argentina’s captain. Taiwo, who currently plies his trade in France with Marseille, would also be a replacement – for the Fiorentina-bound Emiliano Insua. Tottenham are also interested in the £8.5 million-rated Nigerian international left-back and it would be a straight choice between the more prestigious Liverpool or Champions League side Spurs. FWIW
  3. New signing Milan Jovanovic has been handed the famous No.10 shirt after completing his transfer from Standard Liege. The number has previously been worn by Anfield legends like John Barnes, Terry McDermott, Jan Molby, Luis Garcia and John Toshack. It was last donned by another free transfer, Andriy Voronin.

  6. Roy Hodgson has revealed his delight at the content of his talks with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher - and the new boss is confident of a similar outcome when he meets with Fernando Torres after the World Cup. Subscribe to LFC Weekly>> Just hours after being confirmed as Liverpool manager last Thursday, Hodgson met with Gerrard and Carragher - and later Academy Ambassador Kenny Dalglish - in his new office at Melwood. And the tactician was left thrilled with the positive nature of the conversations. "I think they went splendidly," Hodgson told LFC Weekly. "I was very happy to meet the players and, of course, Kenny who I already know so well. "I was delighted to see how positive they are. Everybody is looking forward to the new season." He added: "Obviously Steven and Jamie are the playing heartbeat of the club and it's very important we keep people like that with us. "I anticipate there might be a situation where other big clubs will try and sign Steven, but he gave no indication that he wanted to leave. "Nobody at the club wants him to go so I will be doing my utmost to make sure he stays. I am confident he will." One player Hodgson has yet to meet is Torres due to the striker's World Cup commitments. However, the Spain star announced over the weekend he was pleased with the appointment of the 62-year-old and eager to hear the new gaffer's plans for 2010-11 - and Hodgson admits the feeling is mutual. "Fernando is a wonderful striker and I understand the fans' concerns about his future," he said. "Unfortunately with the World Cup still on, I won't be able to meet him face to face for another few weeks. That's just circumstance and you won't hear me complaining about it. "When I do meet him, I will be doing everything I possibly can to convince him that Liverpool is the place to be. "If he sees progress, I am confident that he won't want to go anywhere else. I think he understands the club and the city." Meanwhile, the manager is planning a new role for Dalglish under his Anfield reign. Hodgson believes the Kop legend has a significant role to play in strengthening communication between the Academy and Melwood as the Reds look to develop new talent. He explained: "I never doubted that Kenny would leave. He's been offered a role, which I believe is a crucial role for the club - not just in the short term, but in the long term. "The club will benefit from Kenny's work long after I've left Liverpool and long after he's left as well. "He is very aware of all the players at the Academy and I understand there are a few promising players emerging. "He will liaise between Melwood and Kirkby and keep me updated with any developments that he deems necessary. "There is a bridge between the Academy and the first team that needs to be created and I believe he can help build that bridge." Offal I could even be cautiously optimistic about this

  9. Its from the Metro so no idea how reliable but also no real surprise..... The race for Joe Cole’s signature took another twist today after Metro.co.uk claim the player will reject the advances of Liverpool in favour of a move to either Arsenal or Tottenham. Several of Europe’s elite have been linked with a move for free agent Cole after he was released by Chelsea after being unable to agree a contract extension. Reports over the past few days have suggested Liverpool were right in the mix and new manager Roy Hodgson was keen to speak with the playmaker in an attempt to persuade him his future lay in Merseyside despite Liverpool being unable to offer him Champions League football next season. But it seems Cole would prefer to remain in London leaving North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham to battle it out. The Gunners are understood to be in pole position after offering Cole a £115,000-a-week contract. However, Tottenham have got a package together themselves that would include several bonuses on top of a £60,000-a-week basic wage. Cole is currently on holiday with his family and has left his agent to deal with all negotiations until he returns next week. He is wanting to take his time over what will be his last major contract but has previously suggested his decision will be based on footballing not financial factors. Metro

  16. Liverpool's Glen Johnson and Tottenham's Gareth Bale on Inter Milan hit list as Rafa Benitez looks for Maicon replacement By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER Last updated at 10:09 AM on 5th July 2010 Rafa Benitez hopes to take Glen Johnson or Gareth Bale to Inter Milan as a replacement for Real Madrid-bound Maicon. The Italian champions are ready to cave in on their Brazil right back's desire to be reunited with Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu and are expected to do a deal for about £25million with the Spaniards. Inter had been hoping for nearer £30m - £10m more than Madrid's valuation of the 28-year-old - but the European champions know that Maicon's heart is set on following Mourinho. Benitez sees his former Liverpool man Johnson as a like-for-like replacement as a defender who is comfortable getting forward down the right flank. An alternative would be Tottenham Hotspur defender Bale, according to Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, even though the Wales international operates down the opposite flank. Argentina veteran Javier Zanetti and 19-year-old rising star Davide Santon have both played at left back but are equally comfortable down the right, opening the way for Inter to bid for Bale. A move for either of the Barclays Premier League stars will be hard to complete. Bale, 20, is highly regarded in Italy and has also been tracked by AC Milan and Juventus. However, Harry Redknapp is keen to hold on to the 20-year-old and reports in Italy claim that Spurs scared off Italian suitors in January by quoting an asking price approaching £20m. On the run: Inter Milan defender Maicon (right) is heading for Real Madrid Johnson is likely to cost even more given that Benitez signed him for Liverpool from Portsmouth for £17m last summer. The 25-year-old has three years left on a staggering £139,000-a-week contract and Inter's hopes for signing him may rest on the cash-strapped Merseysiders being tempted to take him off the payroll.
