Its a good post but I have to disagree with you on one point. I think there is a noticable difference with club footy and international footy. With club footy we want to do well coz we want to be the best team in the land. Also when it comes to the fan base of big clubs it tends to be more cosmopolitan as we have fans from all races and religions, with national sides its drasitcally less cosmopolitan. I prefer to be assoictated with something more cosmopolitan. IMO I also think that in the WC many will use the tournament to whip up nationalist sentiment. This problem will be exacerbated when nations that are current or historical adversaries play against each other. Should England meet Argentina or Germany your deffo gonna get references to old historical animosities in the most denegrating fashion which sickens me. Contrast that to club footie. When Liverpool play Bayern Munich there will hardly be any attention drawn to historic animosities between the nations. I mean hell many of us would have rather seen a German club beat Man Utd the English team in the CL. Also why was it that England fans were not advised to travel to Turkey for the Euro qualifier, but when Liverpool fans went to Istanbul it was relatively trouble free? So you see theres a big difference with following your club and following your country.
