Daniel Alves has revealed that he has opened talks with Sevilla over an improved contract.

The 23-year-old, who can operate at full-back or on the right of midfield, has developed into one of Spanish football's star performers in recent seasons and is now being tracked by a number of Europe's biggest clubs.

He joined Sevilla from Brazilian outfit Bahia back in 2002 and has been a fixture in their first-team virtually ever since.

His superb displays for the Spaniards - including a man-of-the-match showing in last year's Uefa Cup final against Middlesbrough - have seen him find his way on to the radars of the likes of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Currently contracted to Sevilla until 2011, the Primera outfit have rejected all advances for the South American and now plan to reward him for his progress.

Alves, who did express a desire to join Liverpool last summer, insists he is happy to sign a fresh deal at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan and feels an agreement will be reached in the not too distant future.

"It is true, I have started talks and I want a quick solution to close the subject as soon as possible," he said of talks on a new deal.

"I believe that we will reach an accord and am not worried about it.

"I am happy at Sevilla because the club have always treated me sensationally."

Maybe he's a lying c*** like Owen.

He has already got 4years left so another couple won't make much difference to us (and he'll be on more money).

It'll affect Barca / Real more because you can bet his buy out clause will go through the roof.

Well the clause will be higher, as it'll be a calculation of his wage and amount of years on his contract. It's just a legal thing in Spain. Doesn't mean that teams end up paying it, although Real Madrid wouldn't have much problem doing so.

It's all part of the bargain he struck with Del Nido in the summer - Alves stays for one last season to help the club qualify for the CL and he gets a pay rise in the process - hence the new contract terms - there's also a special clause which allows him to leave come June for a set price - 18m Euros was the figure his agent was throwing about last week - to the club of his choice

Lets just hope that we have the dosh for that and that we are still the club of his choice.

I'm of the opinion we'll buy two, max three main players before Sep 07, and he'll be one of them

?18m, that's not too far off the £12m we 'agreed' with Del Nido last year?

No way he's coming to play for us when we're in Intertoto.

*hides*

Hopefully yer head in shame. Nice to see people believing the press eh?

Would agree with you.

I think last summer was Rafa's last "sorting out the squad" and next year money will go on a couple of first team players.

Quality, not quantity for once.

I reckon Alves is a done deal, but until he is at Anfield wearing a Liverpool shirt anything could happen.

Just saw half the Betis team in the cafe on the corner of my street. Odonkor ate a cream cake and then spent several euros at the pick'n'mix. He's playing tonight as well!

It's between Barca and us unless Sevilla CF win the Liga - then he just might be persuaded by Del Nido to see out a further year or two.

If Barca want him they'll surely be favourites won't they...

You're a star Patrick, cheers for that.

As an aside, where would you see him potentially fitting in to Benitez's Liverpool side if we were to tempt him away?

It strikes me that he may have a touch of Riise about him in the sense that he can potentially operate as a full-back or winger but is perhaps not 100% comfortable in either position (esp. playing at right-back in a new, uber-physical league).

I guess he could be bought for one of three positions (I'll put my % probability against each):

1. Right-back in a 4-4-2 formation - as competition/replacement for Finnan - 20%

2. Right Winger in a 4-4-2 formation (or a variation on that theme) - 50%

3. Right Wing Back in a 3-5-2 or 3-5-1-1 - 30%

Where would your money be?

Knowing Rafa he sees him as potentially playing all 3 positions during the course of a season..depending on the opposition.
