A great album stuffed full of great pop tunes. SLTS is over played but this is good.

All this "classic" crap tho...if he hadn't topped himself they wouldn't have made the programme that was on tonight.

complete crap, everyone at the time new it was a groundbreaking album which ckompletely shock up the music scene and introduced the public to different types of music they might never have heard..

It is and will always be a class ic regardless of the fact he was....murdered

Yeah, right.

No one predicted the impact that album was going to have, not even the band (they said as much last night if I recall).

Regardless of whether you like the album or not (I can take it or leave it), it had an impact on a generation and changed the thinking of the record industry (even if only for a short time)

Now, next week's is Simply Red and Stars...

Never got into Nirvana much. A couple of good tunes but all the hype attributed to them was OTT. They were in the right place at the right time in my opinion, but the good thing that came out of all this is that the world got to hear the likes of Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam etc. All better bands than Nirvana in my opinion.

jesus H.

the only downside to Nirvana is that the world got to hear the likes of Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Temple Of The Dog, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam etc

Nowt wrong with Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and especially not Mother Love Bone. And Pearl Jam were OK for two albums.

You can keep Alice In Chains, I grant you

musos my a***

you keep liking whatever you want. Don't let the snobs get you down. Both of the albums you mention are cracking. The fact that they're poular doesn't make them any less good.

People who react so violently (and predictably) against anything 'hyped' are just as bad as those who rush to buy something just because it's hyped

If the Arctic Monkeys weren't so darn successful, people here would be w***ing all over them

Think some people are missing thepoint on a few things

1) Its status as a classic album was not in doubt even before his death. There is a mythology built up around dead rock starts but Nevermind had already reached the status of being a genre defining album long before his death.

2) Any hype that Nirvana got was on the strength of their music - it wasn't some corporate decision to push nevermind. They were as surprised as anyone when it started going big.

3) Arguing against it being anything new/different. It wasn't nor was it claimed to be. Its derivate. Its power come when you think back to the time it was released and the prominence of "hair" metal bands like Warrant, Poison, Motley Crue et al. The power of the album was in turning the public on to another (better) type of music. If anyone decides to listen to Sonic Youth, the pixies or Dinosaur Jr (who have more in common with them than shyte like Alice in Chains and the bands that followed) as a result of buying nevermind (as I did at the time) that can only be a good thing. Especially, if it stops them buying the latest offering by Cinderella or Dio.

Rant over. I was just the right age for this album to have a big impact on how my tastes went. As a naive 15/16yr old I'd never heard anything like it. Loved it at the time. I don't listen to it often now - only nostalgically. Popular things aren't always bad, and that sort of reverse snobbery is painful to listen to.

The only thing I can say against it is that I suppose you could indirectly blame it for Stilskin and Bush. They were minor temporary abominations though.

Pursued all three of those bands after getting into Nirvana, and I'd have all three in my top 10 favourite, as well as Nirvana.

Yeah. No-one had ever heard melodic rock music played with electric guitars before 1991.

Agree for the most part, but that comment is just reverse snobbery ;)

I was able to enjoy Flesh & Blood, Cheery Pie and Long Cold Winter every bit as much as I enjoyed Nevermind.

And I'm not so sure Nirvana was entirely to blame for the death of the glam metal scene - the fact that Native Tongue, Dog Eat Dog and Heartbreak Station all came out around the same time (all of which were a radical departure for their respective artists) more than added to the switch.

And Levis we more to blame for Stiltskin

In 1990 the biggest musical acts in America were people like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. Then Nevermind came out and everything changed. Groups who would never have had a chance of a deal were suddenly being signed up. Nirvana's sound may not have been as new as some claim, but their impact was massive on the industry

They changed what was fashionable in music but Nirvana were not a startingly original band. They were great, like, but hardly the first of their kind.

their lead singer went on to front Genesis. Bizarre.

And Stiltskin were genuine one-hit wonders, weren't they? One number 1 hit and they never troubled the top 40 again.

Whereas Genesis have never had a number one, I believe. Their biggest-selling single was 'I Can't Dance', a piss-take of ... Levi's adverts.

Funny old world
