Stan wants Rooney for Ireland

I agree with him 100%. It was very succesful under Charlton so we need to do something similar to give us more options.

As discussed in the appointment thread, the FAI have unveiled a new underage initiative, in developing an academy and investing more money in youth set-ups. Until this pays dividends we need to do something.

Serious response to a daft a joke - well, it is Wednesday...;)

So - how soon can we expect to see Danny O'Agger and Florent McPongolle lining up next to Patrick O'Kluivert then?

If possible, would you take Nolan?

I'd be of the opinion that Kevin Nolan has never shown any interest in playing for Team FAI; quite the opposite. Now that it looks like he's never going to be good enough for senior England duty with their strength in midfield he can be classed as Irish? No thanks. Hardly the situation Staunton emotively alluded to, when he said he'd be upset if anybody said that his English-born kids couldn't declare for Ireland.

But yes, they will go for him and he'll probably play for them. In Croke Park.

I will have to get my hands on the first tickets for that.

Re: Nolan, i would definitely like to see him play for Ireland. CM is one of our weaker positions at the moment. I think the big question is whether or not Nolan would play for Ireland.

Nolan can't play for us, the "amnesty" for him to declare for us expired a year ago. It would take a Tim Cahill type courtcase to have that overturned and Nolan doesn't really have the exceptional circumstances on his side that Cahill had.

edit: Well it's moot now anyway. :)

Fyds - As nobody else seems to have, I can confirm that I got the joke in the original post. Very good too

Thank f***! I know my jokes can be a bit lame sometimes, but I thought the forum was suddenly full of posters left over from a Newsnight interview!

Yeah, Zat Knight is still eligible I think. The Herald said the other night tha McSheffrey from Coventry and Liam Lawrence from Sunderland qualified too. Apparently McSheffrey wanted to play for us a few years back but Kerr wouldn't include him in the youth squads.

You watch - Daniel Day Lewis will turn up begorrah-ing away in a green velvet suit with a buckled hat and a pig under his arm demanding to play Centre O'forward.

England have had their fair share of "passport players" over the years too (in several sports)

Most countries have had them, especially those who used to have empires

I'm saying nothing.

:D I've a feeling you'd better start preparing yourself for cheering on the 'diaspora'.

I look forward to a young Argentinian striker called Emilio Fitzgerald lining up for us in the not too distant future!!!

Must have missed the Irish Empire...

Think about it, one thing you can rely on, no matter where you are in the world is that there will be an Irish pub there.

Irish imperialism running rife.
