“Blood is thicker than water”. Damaged relationships.

One of my Da’s favourite sayings. “Blood is thicker than water”. Aka, family first, always.

But should it be?

I no longer like 3 of my brothers. I find their attitude to most things to be pretty outrageous, directly obscene in some ways.

I’m the eldest. I moved to England almost 40 years ago, have lived in multicultural towns and cities and travelled a fair bit. I now live in rural Scotland. I’ve always been a leftie (Thanks Shanks), social conscience, etc. I’ve faults like everyone. 

These three (2 Arsenal, 1 City), none with kids, one unmarried and single, stayed in Ireland, smallish town, go to Spain a couple of weeks a year. They work hard, enjoy life, 2 with long term partners, etc. Until 15/20  years ago I very much enjoyed their company. Since Covid or just before maybe (my Mum died in 2017), they veered to the right, and in the past three years, I’d describe them as far right in their views. Tate, Trump, supporters of the Ballymena Rioters, Ireland First in all the worst ways. They want Ireland to leave the ‘corrupt EU’. They’ve always been fervently anti-LGBT+, but are now aggressively so. Anti women’s choice over their own bodies.
A fourth brother is ok ish, but backs up much of this s*** when I’m not around. Their partners agree with their views, one of THEM is wholly supportive.

I had a particular row with one of them ten years or more ago about Hillsborough. They blamed, and still do, the fans. I’ve calmly tried to point to the evidence and they refuse to accept any of it. 
 

A couple of days ago, one of the other three started taking the piss about Jota and the others chimed in. Horrible stuff. I got right stuck into them. They see it as ‘funny’. It’s not. It’s nasty. We’ll hear it in grounds, at Anfield. Online. Prepare yerselves.

Not conversing with them at all now. But we’ve been there before.

Blood is thicker …..

Im intrigued to know… Is it a thing that we have lifelong friends or siblings that suddenly just fall apart, to pieces, because they shock you with what to you seems to be obviously bad views?

It’s odd. Upsetting.
