Wifi router

My old laptop at home died on me so I replaced it with a HP. The new laptop has problem catching signals from my old linksys router ( old model like 5 yrs old) . However it does catch signals from neighbours although they are obviously protected. Is it something with the new laptops or is there a problem with my unit or possibly the new laptops are not compatible with old routers

Sneer at it. Will Self pretty much makes a living out of doing that.

But otherwise I'd agree with Swan Red - the old router may not be up to date enough with the more modern security standards, making the laptop unhappy (in a non-anthropomorphic way): a new router won't cost all that much and will give you an added performance boost too.

Your laptop probably transmits wireless N frequency which supposed to be the most efficient out there whereas your old router probably only transmits a wireless B signal. The new routers can transmit all the different frequencies to be compatible with even the old laptops

I binned an old router, took a brand new router back to the shop and spent hours manually changing the channels settings to get any kind of reception before i twigged that the metal frame of the bed it was right next to was the problem.
