Wifi router

My old laptop at home died on me so I replaced it with a HP. The new laptop has problem catching signals from my old linksys router ( old model like 5 yrs old) . However it does catch signals from neighbours although they are obviously protected. Is it something with the new laptops or is there a problem with my unit or possibly the new laptops are not compatible with old routers
